msconfig

i went to run and typed in msconfig. then i went to the startup tab and unchecked some of the useless programs that startup. after i restarted my computer i got a message and then i just checked not to see it again. when i typed in msconfig in run again it shows that it loads on selective startup. i change it back to normal startup and then all the startup items are selected again. my question is should i keep it on selective startup or keep it on normal startup with all the useless programs starting up?

It really doesn't matter... if it starts up fine on selective startup, then leave it, you really don't want things running unless they're needed Very Happy

r u sure it doesn't matter if it runs on selective startup, or some of the programs might not run or might not be able to install anything? i really don't know if it's okay. does anyone on compsci have their computer running on selective startup?

Author:  md [ Tue Feb 01, 2005 10:54 am ]
Post subject:

Well, if it boots properly once, then it must work Razz If it stops working, you can always change it back to the way it was

Post subject:

yeah, I run it on selective startup.

it just means that it loads only the selected items from the checklist. When a new program is installed, it is checked onto that list by default (I think) Confused

So as long as everything loads and works fine from selective - use that

well i unchecked a lot of the things that startup on my computer. however the problem isn't really solved. the computer turns on quikly and i could enter any of my programs except connecting to the internet. i have to wait about 2 minutes on top of my booting of the computer to connect to my internet. also since i unchecked those programs from starting up and running shouldn't they not run because when i press ctrl + alt + delete and go to processes they show that they are all running.

Author:  md [ Wed Feb 02, 2005 11:28 pm ]
Post subject:

if they're still running when you press ctrl-alt-del then they might be started by some other program; if you cant get rid of them don't worry about it because they don't use very much system resources (really only memory) and they might be needed by some of your other programs.

About the internet, could you connect right away before you disabled all these things? It could be that one of the things you disabled is needed for fast connecting (maybe zone alarm...), although it could also be your internet...

Post subject:

before i disabled those things i had to still wait to connect to the internet. thats why i disabled them at the first place and i still have to wait. i could connect to the internet but after like 2 minutes on top of the boot time

are you connecting to a university network? Cause it sounds like a slow DHCP server problem... Other than that I really can't think of why it would take that long...

i have sypatico internet and it isn't slow itself or the connection time. the problem is when i just turn on my computer it will turn on quikly and i could do watever except connect to the internet. after about 2 minutes the computer was on for i try connecting to the internet and it connect right away.

actually I think the same thing is going on with my home computer. Thinking

in theory, the modem could be just grabbing you a new IP since sympatico's are dynamic.. or something along those lines

i actually did call sympatico and they checked on their computer and said my internet is running fine and i might just have problems with my computer. i don't have any problems with the internet like "Amailer" but i just have to wait until i could connect.

i could only connect when i hear my driver make some sound so the problem might have to do with that

I also had problems with my internet connection (keeped disconnecting randomly) but after using TuneUp Utilities it stopped- and another problem came up -.- not as anoying though XD.
Anyhow, I had contacted sympatico also thinking it was because of them my internet was getting disconnected- but it wasn't its this damm comp! Ah..

So yeah, check your comp/internet settings.

u don't understand my internet works fine and it never gets disconnected and it goes to all the pages and there are no popups but the problem is that when my computer boots up i have to wait about 2 minutes on top of the boot time to connect to my internet. once connected it's really fast it works good nothing is wrong and thats all. thats the only problem.

wat r u talking about norton is pretty good and i highly doubt it's because of it. besides many people use norton even people on compsci and i'm betting that there internet connects right away.

not only that i said that when my computer boots up i could go into any of my programs and games except the internet. after about 2 minutes i could access the internet.

are u using norton internet security or norton personal firewall? or is it just av

Author:  md [ Mon Feb 07, 2005 12:05 pm ]
Post subject:

Norton AV is fairly good, but the firewall thing sucks; I would recomend using hte default windows one (assuming SP2) over it.

anyways...norton firewall doesnt do much to ur internet time (not much)....anyways its not gonna take u 2 minutes to get on just because of a firewall

Post subject:

all i have is a norton anti virus and a zone alarm firewall and i highly doubt that would affect the boot time of the computer from accessing the internet. maybe there's some connection set wrong with my modem but i'm not sure how and wat to check.

i'm aware of it slowing down my computer but the problem is not with my computer running slow. the problem is that when the computer starts up i could access any of my programs and games and everything else except the internet. after about 2 minutes it will allow me to access the internet. u might be right it could be a problem with norton, so maybe i have to change some setting in it or something. i know a lot of people that have norton and don't have this problem

thanks for the list it's really good! Smile although it didn't solve my problem it made things worse. when i press control alt delete and look at the processes that are running a few of them under the same name schost i think is said to be a trojen. i can't really end the task because it shuts down my computer in one minute. i ran virus scans and spyware adaware scans but it still arears to be running. how can i delete it or fix the problem?

well are you noticing bad performance or anything else wierd on your PC that would indicate a virus?

Author:  cool dude [ Fri Feb 11, 2005 6:34 pm ]
Post subject:

sorry it's actually called svchost.exe and to answer your question i don't really notice much of a problem accept for the problem i mentioned before which was i can't access the internet untill about 2 minutes after booting my computer.

Post subject:

svchost is the service host program; it generally runs more than one service, so you may only have one copy, or you might have more. Stopping it will stop your computer from running. if you want to see which services are running use the services control panel (it can be found in administrative tools), only disable a service if you know what it does, and you are sure that you don't need it. Disabling some services will prevent windows from booting again. If in doubt leave it be, and as always google is your friend when it comes to figuring out what each service is.

I'm running windows 98 (I needed to unsistall linux Sad )

And have done the following:

Config.sys starts nothing
Autoexec.bat starts nothing

And startup only runs: regscan, taskmon, 2 ATI programs, a CD burning program and winamp agent (ati, cd, and winamp are NOT needed).

well guess wat i called sympatico and they said they can't help me because thats a problem with xp. they said i could try calling microsoft and they might be able to do something but i know its gonna cost me and i won't bother with it. although sympatico technicians aren't all that great, so they might be wrong, so if any one knows some way to fix this or at least something to try please tell me.

i'm not even gonna bother. they probably won't be able to do anything so that sucks Sad it doesn't matter i'm thinking of getting a new laptop for university in a year or two but they r kinda expensive and i have to save up for university so i don't know if that will be happening.

P.S. i only disabled the startup things in msconfig but not the services and i got about 25 services starting up does that matter or can that slow down my computer.
