Ummm... IBM gladly sold their PC business, which was not very profitable. IBM continues to reign supreme in servers and chip engineering.

Most computers sold in North America are manufactured either in Taiwan or on the mainland.

IBM sold their PC business to Chinese computer maker Lenovo.

They didn't sell their chip-making business, server business, or software business. The XBox2 will be powered by a PowerPC chip, and IBM is still making those.

Lenovo will continue to use the IBM brand name for at least the next five years.

They already are the world's best. Now they just need to get the rest of the world to realize it.

Heh, Andy. This is at least a month-old news Wink

They'll also still be making large computers for scientific modelling and stuff. Seems just the desktops are going to Lenovo. Something about IBM not being able to reach the Chinese market as a result of legal issues anyway (while Lenovo obviously can), so this way they can penetrate the last large untapped market they've got.

Plus their PC business wasn't making them much money and brought them significant business ties to Intel and Microsoft that they didn't want, seeing as they're competing with both of those companies pretty heavily. This way Lenovo gets to bear all of those burdens and IBM still has name recognition.

If only it were true, Microsoft actually got it's start with the Altair 8080, created by MIPS (not the processor). All IBM did was create a pc to compete with the tens of other pcs. The reason why they took over was because they had MUCH better distribution, and marketing power.

I'm sorry to say this, but Microsoft probably would have gotten just as big if it wasn't for IBM, although it may have taken longer.

Oh well, sadly, Dell still has better support.

As for Lenovo taking over IBM Desktop PC sales, I'd be hella glad to finally get rid of all those P2 IBM's in our PC labs at school. Sadly, that will probably happen after this school year, which also happens to be my last year there. Sigh.

No, they don't. Especially overseas. IBM and Toshiba provide exactly the same service in any country they cover. Dell offers spotty support outside North America.

It's simple, Pandas pwn. Pandas come from China, and by association that means China pwns.

Seriously though, I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a trend.
