Knoppix is based off Debian.

I personally would recommend Ubuntu. Also based off Debian, and it comes in both a LiveCD version and a version you can install, and that version is on a single CD.

Actually, Knoppix is about as easy as you can get for Linux. No installation, no configuration (except the cheat codes), no driver-searching. Just insert-and-go. Don't mislead yourself into thinking it will be this easy to get a fully functional Linux system installed, at least not on your first time. It's not hard either, but it will require a bit of research and perhaps some outside help. Check out the Ubuntu Linux thread in G.D

as soon as i get familiar with unix nowadays with my UNIX course and find a replacement for my typesetting math (i use mathtype + word, openoffice screws it up so i am not using that, maybe wait for openoffice v2), i am ditching windows

just go with SuSE: http://www.suse.com/en/private/download/suse_linux/index.html

Post subject:

I use SuSE 9.2 and im very satisfied , the dvd image comes with every package you need to get a solid pc running

Podder ***** You are entitled to a copy of Staroffice from Sun Microsystems

Its a free license to students and some other people ,

I just recieved ( Dec 29 ) the 20 copys of Ubuntu i sent for . Ubuntu will send you as many copys as you want FOR FREE not even shipping and handling

There are many good Linux distros and I like Windows aswell , but id stay away from Debian on your first go . THe package systems are aot more tedious and SuSE makes life easy for new people ITS GOT a graphical install for hte love of pete

Post subject:

and dont forget.. SuSE has the best suport for your hardware.. it is backed up by most of the major firms.

I'm going to give Ubuntu a shot. If that doesn't work, SuSE is on deck. Then I guess I'll do that Gentoo install...

Author:  rizzix [ Sun Jan 09, 2005 12:10 pm ]
Post subject:

oh Gentoo is plain annoying.. believe me.. it will take u forever to customize that thing. its best used as a server side installation.

Author:  shorthair [ Sun Jan 09, 2005 12:15 pm ]
Post subject:

Gentoo took 7 hours for me to installl, i hate ftp installs

the packages just kept coming and coming it was a big mistake to install everything during hte main install.

What is good about suSe is that KDE 3.3 is very very user friendly and Konquerer is amazing ( Linux version of Explorer ) becusae of all hte document picture and video prewviews withing it. ( meaning you cand watch or open anything without leaving that one window you dont need a 3rd party app to open everytime you want to see a text document ) Gnome cant offer that and i think Nautilis is a peice of crap anyway

You should feel relaxed with suSE its almost as friendly as windows

but beside the installtion the customization of gentoo is a pain as well.

Post subject:

If Gentoo only took you 7 hours to install you:

1) Did a stage 3 install, which isn't an option for me. I can't get anything but a stage 1 working correctly
2) Didn't emerge X11/KDE/Gnome/OO.org. Again, not an option.

yea it took me 18 hrs stage1

Author:  md [ Tue Jan 11, 2005 3:25 pm ]
Post subject:

took me about 21 hours to get gentoo installed from stage 1and then emerge xorg, kde, and open office. And in the end I went back to windows cause I couldn't run any of my games Sad

do a duel boot SuSE/XP. u wont regret it.

they've made hardware accel. support (for nvidia cards in perticular) compeletly automated. wootz. lots of improvements etc. as compared to 9.1. look&feel could've improved (its pretty much the same as 9.1) but of course u can customize it. dvd read/write support enabled by default.

dont you have to buy SuSie ... and if not, Dl for me (looking to Linux) is not feasable ... brand new computer, no software whatever, and dialup on old comp .... is there a free SuSie?

Author:  Hikaru79 [ Thu Jan 13, 2005 7:56 am ]
Post subject:

You can get it for free: http://www.suse.com/en/private/download/suse_linux/

I realize this, however, i have dialup, plus how am i going to download it onto my new computer?

Author:  Mazer [ Thu Jan 13, 2005 12:36 pm ]
Post subject:

You're not technically downloading the operating system. You're downloading image files of the installation CD(s), which you can burn to real CDs and install from there. I understand that it can suck to be on dialup, but if you want to get a free version of SuSe, I'm pretty sure that's the way to get it. Check out download sites for download resume programs like GetRight if you're worried about being disconnected during the download. Or ask a friend to download the CDs and burn them for you (reimburse him/her for the CDs of course).

Post subject:

that free version of suse is an ftp install. i dont recommend an ftp install for dialup connections.. basically in an ftp install, you download a mini-installation cd that boots up ur computer and loads a setup program with an ftp server address. it then downloads and install around 1.4gb minimal (you can add to this later) and guides u through the configuration.

Post subject:

Aright, thanks guys, i think i might get my friend to Dl it, i actually never thought of doing it that way! so that ftp install is ok for Cable tho .... you can still burn it to disc and stuff rite?

Author:  rizzix [ Thu Jan 13, 2005 1:04 pm ]
Post subject:

no u cant.. the installation is done through the net.

but i've noticed some servers with DVD iso's of the complete FTP install. u could just download that.

Personally I love gentoo; my major problem is with the ATI linux drivers, and the difficulty getting games to run... maybe once i get back to ottawa i'll find a way to get it all working fast-like...

[edit] Oh, and stage1: 14 hours... OO + X + Gnome: 6 hours

Is it muted?

Open an xterm as root and type alsamixer. Press 'm' over an entry to unmute it if it's muted.

Press Alt+F2 and type 'gnome-terminal'

There, type 'sudo alsamixer'

It'll probably ask you for your password. Type it and you'll be in alsamixer. From there, just left and right arrows to navigate.
