It doesn't matter. We went from IRC, to Napster to KaZaa to BitTorren to... well there're some other networks that slipped under the radar of lawsuits. Such as LimeWire. And IRC, the whole fundamental idea, is still there. You just have to wait for some kid from a country with a law that's not up to date with filesharing lawsuits to start a new network. Which is as hard to taking the existing software and renaming the titlebar. |

Woah, am I the only one who realizes that nothing happened to BitTorrent at all? Bittorrent's not a network -- I have no idea why the article you posted says Quote: The file swapping network BitTorrent has lost most, if not all, of its Hub connections. The quick change in status is believed to be directly correlated with the MPAA threats of legal action if the network continued to operate. Although the change doesn't shut down BitTorrent, it does signify that fileswapping sites operating in plain sight are concerned.
This is wrong on so many levels. First, BitTorrent is not a network, it's a protocol. Second, SuprNova was not a hub. BitTorrent doesn't HAVE hubs, and even if it did, SuprNova wouldn't be one of them because they never hosted torrents, they only LINKED to trackers that DID. The 'quick change in status' had to do not with 'threats' of legal action but actual arrests taken place in Finland that were prompted by the MPAA. And lastly, BitTorrent can't be shut down any more than HTTP can be shut down -- as long as there are torrents, there is BitTorrent. As for SuprNova itself, there are tons of other trackers out there. I'd give you the link to the SuprNova Closure FAQ, but it got hacked. Oops.
Either way, enough with the doomsday prophecies. It's not the first time a large source of warez was shut down and it certainly won't be the last. Remember Napster? Who misses that anymore?  |

well apparently their definition of a hub is a site that links to torrent links. actually its more like a site where u can host ur own torrent links. which is stupid cuz its really the tracker that holds the files... but its true, you need a torrent for pinpointing a file in a tracker. and they can't shut down a tracker.. cuz that part of the bittorrent technology as a whole. basically.. no trackers.. no torrents... so yea.. let em shut down the hubs. |

I noticed that many torrent sites have sections for programs. Obviously, they are vulnerable to having malicious code in them. However, if so many people are downloading programs then I think it's a reasonable assumption that most in fact do not have anything malicious about them. So, my question is if I want to download a program, how can I check to make sure that it is not anything malicious?(short of decompiling it.) I've got norton antivirus, which I like for it's ability to right-click and scan a group of files for viruses, but I've always wondered what stuff could be flying under the radar, even with up to date virus definitions. |

How can trackers check a torrent before it's uploaded? That would mean the uploader has to send the file some other way to a mod, have them check, recieve confirmation, and then upload the torrent. I doubt that happens with *any* tracker, much less a link site like Suprnova that links to a million different trackers. They can't all be trusted sources. Anyone can upload a bad file and get away with it for a few hours before someone rings the alarm (by then it is probably already too late). Because there's no "server" involved in Bittorrent, nobody can see or check the file until regular leechers already have it. |

AntiVirus isn't the problem. Norton Internet Security, which is usually bundled, is. It's really intrusive. It'll start asking you whether you want to allow every single program you ever run whether you want to allow access, it blocks ports, etc. Basically, it makes your computer secure, but practically unusable. There's plenty of other security solutions out there-- I'd reccomend one of those. |

actually, norton antivirus is the problem.. i'd recommend pc cillin for antivirus then zone alarm for firewall.. the norton security 2005 is actually pretty good. |
