You guys know of any? I'd sooner shoot myself than fork over any amount of money with the purpose of increasing my Doom3 framerate, but at the same time I'd like a fairly good card. I like "powered by" ATI/nVidia as opposed to "built by" due to the less expense. To give you an idea of what I'm looking at, I've been thinking of going with a PowerColor Radeon 9200SE for $70. Except that I often hear about how ATI's OpenGL support isn't as good as what you get from nVidia. But really, the point is I'll need a graphics card but I'm not putting it first. I don't want to pay a ridiculous amount for it to play the latest game. In fact, here's what I'm playing on my current computer: clicky (the first one). So... yeah. Any thoughts? Being able to use the card to connect two monitors would be a plus. |

uhm... well i wouldnt buy any SE version of an ati... for a cheap/decent one i'd either buy a geforce fx 5200 or the radeon 9200.. they're both about $100, depending on the features that come with it, like vivo.. both of them are aimed at office use, so i wouldnt really expect to get very much 3d support from them, like advanced pixel shaders and whatnot my dad has a powercolor radeon 9200se and he regrets getting it, he doesnt do any major gaming or anything either... |

If you want linux, go nVidia all the way. I've been an avid user of ATI cards, and I haven't had a problem with any of them. Get yourself a nice 9600, or, if you want to fork out a few extra dollars, a 9800 SE (since the only difference between the PRO/XT is the bios). |

i dunno, i didnt think the guy wanted anything that expensive... they're all 150 - 200$ cards ... except for maybe the 9600se |

Since we are on the topic of video cards, how much would you say a decent 64mb video card is? Say a GeForce3 or something, because I think its time to upgrade my 16mb card. |

I prefer ATI to nVidia because of the better dual monitor support. Most of the older nVidia cards can only drive one monitor, whereas most ati cards can drive two. The thing is though, nVidia has much better dual monitor software. Quote: XFX GeForce FX 5200 / 128MB DDR / AGP 8X / VGA / TV Out / Video Card But only one head, and no DVI |

That GeForce looks pretty damned nice... litterally (most of my cards are boring green so blue gives this one an advantage). And the price seems right. For that price I might look into getting two of them and getting a motherboard that supports 2 AGP8X slots (if possible). But I'll keep looking for now. |

u are right as far as open GL being a little bit better on NvDia then on ATI and ATI is better at Direct X. Althoug IMO not noticible so. I go tthe 9800 PRO now that the price has dropped, adn I really like it, it is not loud and it works really well. Just wathc out when u buy NViDia becuase some of there fans are exremely loud . I think oneo f therir cards 1-3 generationa ago ws desribed asn "sounding like a vacumm cleaner had been truned on inside your PC" |

I disagree with that, I don't think ATI pays n e less attention to quality then NvIDIA does. |

At this point in the game, it's all about exclusive titles (nVidia: the way it's meant to be played), as the cards are essentially the same. It's a driver war out there. If you read the posts in megagames.com, you can learn all about the graphics card wars. ATI SUX0RZ!!!!! OMG!1!111 NOE U R STUPD ND GHEY OMG LOL ATI RULZZ NVIDIA SUCXXXXX!!1111111one |

Well, they both make valid points... but how can I choose now? Aside from the cheap GeForce shorthair posted about, I'm really liking how more of the ATI cards have dual heads. So I guess it's coming down to this: could anybody running Linux with ATI based cards tell me about their experience? Ease of use with drivers, framerates (running lots of visual shit, or perhaps... "Linux games")? How difficult would it be to run a dual monitor setup with an ATI card under Linux? |

If you are going to be using linux, go for the nvidia card hands down. Nvidia has embraced the Linux world, and writes them decent drivers. As for ATI, well...we still don't have drivers for the AMD64's. |

my 2 Ati cards have never been supported for 3d ....... I think Nvidia has like 99.9 % of htere cards covered . Its a no brainer to go with Nvidia for Linux and hte fact you can snap one up for 24 dollars is completly unbeatable |

Just wathc out when u buy NViDia becuase some of there fans are exremely loud . I think oneo f therir cards 1-3 generationa ago ws desribed asn "sounding like a vacumm cleaner had been truned on inside your PC" thats because ati kept the 0.15 micron technology and nvidia uses the 0.13 during the 9000 and the fx series ... since the ati chips are bigger they have an easier time with dispersing heat. and as for linux, i tried to run a radeon 7000/ve a while back, and there were absolutly no driver support for them, however i found some driver support on linux for the later cards... but i had a geforce fx 5200 and that had awesome driver support, i'm not too sure now, i just bought a radeon 9800pro and i'm kinda scared to use it in linux. but since some of the nvidia driver team joined up with ati and started making the catalyst drivers, and now with nvidia and their new drivers, who knows whats gonna happen i'm not too sure which one is really better anymore, its mostly what you prefer, if you go to http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/index.html they have a whole thing on the new video cards, benchmarks and everything... sometimes nvidia is at the top and other times is ati, so who knows but like i said, if you want a nice, cheap videocard, that can play simple games, and some 3d games nicely but not with too high of quality, go for the geforce fx 5200 or the radeon 9200 ... they're both (new and retail) approx $100.. either that, or what i did was i saved my money and waited until i could buy a "titsed out" card so i wouldnt have to upgrade for a while and still play awesome games |

No, not popups. But firefox seems to block the sponsored links as well. It's just that when I'm at school using IE they show up and any time your mouse happens to go over it a little bubble advertisement shows up. Ultra-lame. |
