Open beta starts tomorrow, for free. You can download it at www.fileplanet.com or read about it at www.blizzard.com. A (very) informative fansite is www.worldofwar.net Anyway, I bought the stress test, and its amazing. Lots of fun. Any gamers in the crowd should definately check out the beta tomorrow. If you like what you see, you can buy it in stores on the 23rd. Unfortunately for poor people in the crowd it does have a monthly fee to play, but on the upside it doesent need a brand new computer. It's beautiful, seriously. Blizzard's first shot at an MMORPG.. and theyve done quite a fine job. Check out the beta, it's well worth the 10 hour download. |

First approach at a MMORPG? What happened to Diablo I and II? Monthly fee sucks, they'll probably lose a lot of users for that, though they'll make lots of money. I guess, in the end, it's all about the money. |

Diablo I and II weren't massively multiplayer. They were 8-player. The idea of a MMORPG is that everyone is in the same game at the same time. Theres no comparison with this to D2, but im going to compare anyway. In Diablo, there were four towns. In WoW, you can travel anywhere in the entire warcraft world. I mean ANYWHERE. And it's a big world, too! ![]() But youre right, blizzard will lose a lot of players because of the fee. However, the company is so well known that they will do better than their mmorpg competitors. Also, the fee should make up for the decrease in users. I personally dont mind paying; the last computer games I bought were warcraft 3 and warcraft 3: the frozen throne. lol =) |

the last time i read about it.. the gameplay sucked.. although the graphics were quite good.. i mean amazingly good.. i mean the best!!! but not so easy to beat Lineage II. (as a warning... GuildWars is going to be quite good... no monthly fee... just a one-time fee for buying their cd) on the other hand.. blizzard cinematics have improved: http://www.apple.com/games/trailers/worldofwarcraft/trailer480.html |

ive already changed my undrwear for the same reason a couple times... ![]() Hey! I thought the open beta was supposed to be downloadable today.. i woke up 10 mins early to d/l but i think we gotta wait a bit longer. rizzix the gameplay is great man. The graphics could be better, but they are pretty great. If you remember playing wc3, everything had that "cartoony" look to it. It's the same thing to a much lesser degree. If you choose to be undead, you can make your guy have no jaw and that soft tongue tissue just hangs down.. the characters are awesome. For instnace, a troll male compared to a gnome is huge. The gnome only goes up to its knees, and both races are playable. All 8 races have their own characteristics and you need to be a certain race for certain char classes. i.e. u must be tauren or night elf to be a druid. If you like PvP it has its own PvP servers, or if you like to kill monsters you can play on the PvE servers, where questing and grouping up is a must. Theres still some dueling on pve, just more of it on the player vs player server. And guilds can have tournaments i think. The orc town has a colloseum where u can go and sit on the benches to watch the gladiators duel. It's so full, or as my programming teacher would say, robust. =) |

<supahsarcasmzor>My absolute favourite part is that they took a strategy game and turned it into a massively multiplayer (so called) roleplaying game because MMORPGs are so kewl. Kewl like reality tv. And everybody loves it.</supahsarcasmzor> But seriously, I remember watching a trailer for WoW back in the day. One scene had a dramatic battle sequence where about 6 humans are on one hill, about 6 orcs are on another, and everybody plays there "charge" emoticon animation and runs into the middle where they all stand around stupidly until the characters perform an attack and the animation plays. Does anyone remember the original Warcrafts, or am I just an old geezer who rambles on about the classics? |

Wow, are the graphics in the trailer like that in the game? .... wow. |

That animation is the intro-video that is to be put into the actual game. And yes, we all still do recall the old Warcraft II: BNE, but think about it. Warcraft III: TFT is the same thing, but with an uber beefed-up graphics engine and some major strategy updates. WoW is like Diablo II, but it's a real MMORPG (ie: Not 8 players per game), and it has an uber beefed-up graphics engine, with some major strategy updates. Those videos you saw were that of the early, pre-beta (probably alpha), version of the game. Because I was playing the closed-beta at my friend's house about a month ago, and you could do such crazy things as stalk people while hiding in the bushes, and you could hear foot steps, climb on trees and ambush people as they run by. Attacking is a lot more swift too, not like FF where you'd take turns, but you can actually stand off at a distance and shoot arrows at people, and they can run up at you and swiftly take a sword to your face, cast spells or what-not. It's all real-time, like quake & cs, only, WoW style, and in 3rd person. |

yea it's just like FWO, GuildWars, MuOnline, Lineage, City of Heros, Matrix Online .... the list goes on and on and on and on. IMO Lineage II graphics engine was out of this world. |

I remember. I haven't watched the trailer, but WoW doesn't appeal to me, from all I've heard of it. It may be a neat story and have cool graphics, but it lacks the strategy of the real warcrafts, and especially of starcraft. |

WoW's still pwnz all. ![]() Yeah, I still play starcraft. But that doesn't change the fact that WoW is going to pwn everything. I'm paying the monthly fee, I don't care. ![]() |

wc3 has a LOT of strategy.. unfortunately it has a lot of noobs, and most ppl can't appreciate the greatness of the game because the high degree of skill constrast makes the online play not noob friendly at all. There are a lot of good strategy games, though. ive heard rome total war is pretty awesome, and some ppl like C&C... My username's from Total Annihilation (the flea was the tiniest robot. i thought it was cool) if any of you guys played that game. I sure did ![]() i played the sequel to death as well even though it sucked. Let me tell you a story of why i owe a big part of my life to blizzard entertainment. My dream, since i was 7 yrs old, was to make my own video game. I always wanted to do this. It started with Final Fantasy 1, Castle of the Winds(old school game set in norse mythology), and Microman (cheap rip off of megaman). I wanted to make my own versions of these games and improve on the parts i didnt like. One day a long time ago, i came across wc2. I was in grade 2 or 3 and i spent my own $35 dollars that i had saved up for not buying pizza on pizza days. it was a lot of fun. i wanted to make my own maps and terrain so my guys could be in cooler spots. Luckily the game had an easy editor so i could do that. then came out C&C red alert. it had a stupid editor compared to wc2. so i wanted a new game. Then starcraft came out and its map editor was wicked. Not only could you smack down terrian and units, but you could have triggers (actions depending on conditions). This was my first introduction to a type of programming. So i mastered that. It wasnt hard, and i made some semi famous stuff. I learned HTML cause i heard i wanted to put my maps on the web. Then warcraft came out. Oh wow... how i loved it. The trigger editor was hard though... there was a selection type thing like in SC, but the best mappers used a script called JASS. This was total, real scripting. It was awesome. I learend so much about programming and got famous to nerds for it as well. I also got into skinning and modelling, though i dropped modelling cause i really sucked at it. I was a pretty good skinner though. So anyway, here i am, and im trying to make my super awesome 2 player duel style version of Microman set in Castle of the Winds type era. Blizzard, like compsci, has helped me move closer to my goal... i dont care what they charge for WoW or how much it sucks, im paying up. Turns out its not that expensive for an mmo, and i really like it. P.S. the open beta has started but the blizzard site is down and all tha fileplanet signups are gone. I dont know if im gonna get into this open beta at all... good luck templest and ne1 else excited. |

yeah, yet guild wars still own WoW. http://www.guildwars.com some of ex-blizzard employees made that game, they call it CORPG which stands for competitive online role-playing game. why do i prefer it? because it is like any other blizzard game (except WoW) where there is ABSOLUTELY NO MONTHLY FEE. |

Well, I'm not much of a gamer (at all, in fact), but I have to admit that the trailer sent me scurrying for a new pair of undies too. I may give this a shot for a few days, just out of curiousity. Problem, though-- does anybody know the probability that, if I download this, I'll be able to WINE it? =/ |

The night I started the download, it only weant for ~20 minutes before it pooped-out. So basically, I left my box on all night for nothing. So I restarted the dl' yesterday morning. ![]() |

all the more reason to switch to Sympatico. |

I got sympatico. It shoulda been a fast dl, but my stupid router made my dl slow as hell. anyway, i dl'd in about 25 hours and managed to play an hour of it this morning before school. the lag was awful, WAYYYY worse than in closed beta. right now all the servers are down... theyve been down for five hours. dear myob & other ppl that think fee sucks: do you not realize that WoW is an insane game with heavy load on servers. blizzard is not being cheap or greedy by charging the $10 monthly fee. they have 2 weeks to get a loan and set up several more servers worldwide or their rep goes to hell and they dont sell many copies, resulting in the company going bankrupt. Ten bucks a month is nothing.. anyone with a computer good enough for guildwars can afford this. I dont see how money is a factor in computer gaming if you are careful with it and make best use of your dollars. But i should watch my tongue cause this might flop out on bliz and WoW could turn out to be a piece of garbage because of stupid errors. Btw they only left the open beta signups "open" for like 30 hours. Imagine how many new ppl would come to play the game... blizzard could be screwed in 2 weeks and i, among millions worldwide, will be left sad. so what do i say? good luck my warcrafting company, if you dont mess up i will gladly buy your excellent game. |

Sympatico is gross. My friend, who has the fastest Bell can offer, always starts pinging out at around ~8PM+. It's always like that. Not one day has that not happened, and bell can't fix that. Not to mention that the highest bell goes is 3 Mbps whilst Rogers goes 5Mbps. I don't mind having to reset my modem every once in a while, if it means that normally I'll be able to go almost x2 faster than anyone else. If you put it into perspective, you can only use bell while you're signed in. While I skip that step all together, so me resetting my modem, would be the equivalent amount of work as you signing in. So in essence, I'm "signing in" about once every two weeks. Not bad, I'd say. And it really only goes out when I forget to cap my torrent upload rate at 25 KBps. That "Blizzard Downloader" doesn't cap it, so I upload at ~80 KBps, and my net poops-out. Regular torrents, with Azureus, I cap at 25 KBps uploads, and I'm set. |
