At least it won't be too much of a slowdown for the people dumb enough to install it. It'll fit in nicely crunched between their BonsaiBuddy and SmileyCentral bars.

Google is in for some trouble if they keep spreading out as quickly as they are.

other than the google search IMO the only tool they have churned out so dar that is really usefull and good is the google toolbar (aswome popp blocker for IE) and GMAIL which is superior to hotmial and yahoo in every way possible.

Even M$ is worried about google, I think just recently they upgraded hotmail free storage to 250 MB.

I've got 250mb on my hotmail account. Seems to be a pretty stupid move on their behalf. Why try to compete with gmail and the other free gig email services by giving (some of ) us a simple 250mb? And if they give somebody 250mb inbox space free, what else is there to inspire one to subscribe to their premium services? Improved spam filter? I'll bet it still wouldn't let you block messages from hotmail staff.

actually hotmails spam filter was one of the main reasons that I left hotmail for gmail other than the expended storage. It rarely caught real spam messages and almost always put messages from my friends into the junkmail folder een after I told it not to.

Gmail on the other hand has an amazing spam filter. Never gotten one piece of spam in my inbox and every legitimate message gets through o.k.

In aditin Gmails UI is alot simpler and easier to use than hotmails also and i like how it treats messages as conversations back and forth.

I have 2 hotmail accounts, the one account ive had for 4+ years and has 250 mb the account ive had for about a year and its only 2 mb so maybe the accounts that have been around longer have the better storage

That is what they are doing.

The CPanel spamfilter is pretty awesome. Only once or twice a month a spam email gets through, and I think ours is messed up a bit.

I don't think they're really trying to compete with Gmail. It's not like any of us are going to go back to hotmail for one quarter of the storage space. But it is incentive for people who are so weened on M$ products, to not switch to something like Gmail.

Why go through the hassel of changing email addresses if you've got more storage than you need anyways? People who made due with 2mb will do just fine with 250.

So sadly, it probably was a good move for M$.

(Also, I doubt they'll allow people to sign up for .NET passports with non-hotmail accounts much longer. Which will be more incentive to keep a hotmail account for those who already have them.)

the 250mb thing was planned during the summer. they are doing updates now... and the reason i use hotmail is that i get 0 junk mail

I think the only real advantage that hotmail has left is it's integration with msn... if google came out with a msn compatible chat client then i bet a lot of peopel would abandon hotmail allttogether.

I disagree... I think with some new features this could be a useful tool. Whenever I'm looking for something using Windows Search (which turns out to be often enough...) it always seems to take much too long. Even if I know the exact filename and type, the search can still take several minutes to search through everything. Before, I remember thinking "Google can search through the text of over 4 billion web pages and it's taking minutes to find a single file on my computer?"

Anyway, it should to add support to at least check through the filenames of all types, and other options like checking modified dates and such. And unfortunately right now it only indexes your cache with IE, not Firefox...

I hadn't checked my hotmail in about a month and a half. When I went to check if I had gotten a 250 mb account, my account was gone. It no longer existed.
