Post subject: | Need help with VM Virtual Bo |
Here is the story. I want to use Ubuntu on the Oracle Virtual box that I installed from their website. I am running windows 7. I needed to install an .iso image file to run ubuntu on the vm. So i went to the website to install the ubuntu file. I clicked install and selected the 32 bit flavour. It popped up at the bottom on my screen downloading... It was installing into winrar. I waited the 12 minutes for it to install the 700MiB's. After installing I opened the folder. Apparently I was supposed to see a single .iso file inside the folder that I installed. But instead I saw a ton of folders in their with random crap. The folder were named in order: .disk, boot, dists, doc, efi, install, isolinux, pics, pool presee, cdromupgrade, md5sum, README.diskdefines. Not one of those folders actually had a .iso file inside. I am very lost and I have searched google for 2 hours for an answer that I did not find. I really need some help. Can anyone here help me? I am very desperate for some help. I tried re-installing the 700MB file again and it still gave me the same file. I really need help. Thanks, ~QP |

Isn't the 700 mb file the iso? WinRAR will open it like a regular zip file as an iso is just another file container format. Basically you just viewed the files/folders on the cd image. |

. . . Don't 'open' the file. You downloaded/saved it somewhere onto your computer right? You use VirtualBox to select the iso file. Also: .iso is the file extension. If you haven't already done so: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Show-or-hide-file-name-extensions That will allow you to see file extensions (as normally it's hidden by default on windows). Wait. Are you talking about http://virtualboxes.org/images/ubuntu/ or http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop ? |

Wait uh oh. Now on boot it says, this kernel requires x86 - 64 CPU to boot please select another to boot, i assume i installed the wrong version. I selected the amd version |

I'm going to assume you're not retarded and downloaded the amd x64 version when you don't have an 64 bit amd cpu. So that probably means you haven't enabled virtualization in your boot options. |

Okay. What's you CPU? Is it AMD or Intel? Is it 32 bit or 64 bit? |

This page tells us you have hardware virtualization for your cpu: http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-A-Series-A10-4600M-Notebook-Processor.74065.0.html Have you ever gone into your computer's BIOS? I'm going to take the safe path and assume you haven't. Use these tools to find out if you have virtualization enabled. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/configure-bios.aspx If it's not enabled, you're going to have to go into your computers BIOS and enable it. |

Okay, I installed the i386 version and its working now. It's working, it got a bunch of erros at startup but its working fine now, one more question. Does it matter if i run the virtual box along with my original OS? Does it matter if i keep it open all the time and dont close it? Does it kill my sys memory fast? The main reason that I am using this is to run some of the python scripts i made and to test some of the extensions i made for backtrack 5 |

It depends on how much memory and CPU time you dedicated to it. For instance if you have a quad core machine, and 8GB of ram, you won't even notice if you've given it 1 core and 2GB of ram (which would probably be MORE than enough). |

i have a dual core and 16 GB of ram, but its a lap top |

> Does it matter if i run the virtual box along with my original OS? That's pretty much the entire point of a virtual machine. > Does it matter if i keep it open all the time and dont close it? You're using up a dedicated amount of resources. Even if the VM (virtual machine) isn't using them, that doesn't mean they are free for use in the main OS. Nor will more than you've dedicated be available to your VM. You'll probably notice more lagging in the VM than in your main OS. > Does it kill my sys memory fast? Learn how to output cpu/memory usage and decide for yourself. Do so both on the Windows side, and inside the VM. > i have a dual core and 16 GB of ram, but its a lap top How much did you dedicate? (1 core + ? ram) |

If you dedicate a single core and enough RAM to keep the VM happy (if you have 16 GB then might as well give it 4 GB) then you probably won't notice that both are running at once unless both are accessing the hard drive a lot. |

Yeah then you won't ever really notice. It'll consume battery life more, but that's about it. (unless you're playing games) |
