On the home page there is a "Recent Discussions" box. The dots are different colors, for all-too-arcane reasons. You guys need to add a few lines of code and get a Legend for it. When i first joined it was a nuisance I didn't know, and a friend of mine also pointed it out. |

There's a grand total of 2 possible colours. Red -- threads with posts that you have not read Black -- threads with posts that you have already read Also -- http://imgur.com/ |

I thought it was rather simple. Red means its unread, black is read. |

Why would we need a legend? It's pretty self-explanatory... |

And the point is that you learnt quickly (hopefully). I don't call it convenience, I would call it unnecessary clutter. |

I totally thought this thread was going to be about some old user who had legendary status. Also, this idea is silly. a:visited is something you see everywhere on the web. |

Fair enough...though I still think that a Computer Science Forum would not require that. |

The ones on the Recent Discussions are red while the ones in the forum are golden-brownish. |

The red is supposed to draw your eyes towards the unread posts. The read posts are black and boring. Since you noticed it, I'd say that it did its job, no? |

CompSci.ca's UI is allready some what bloated and adding a legend is proably only going to make it wrose. Also i would have to side with thoes that say changing the color of a link once read should be intuitive as it is used in most websites and part of the css standard. Furthermore, even for users that do not understand why the color changes their is no loss in functionality of the site. You don't have to understand why the dot is red to click on it and view the topic. However i am thankful for the suggestion and it is likely that other parts of the site could be better labeled for the less internet savvy. |

While this topic is up in the air, I'd like to point out that I experience a bug now and then where when I refresh the page, all the topics somehow get read or something, and everything goes unread. This is annoying as I then have to manually check any threads I am active in. |

Read topics are stored in your CompSci.ca cookie, if you delete it or somthing goes wrong with it you can get such results. |

Okay well how does that work on a new computer? Cuz when I use my iPod I know it automatically lists everything as read, but then when I go back to my laptop they are all still read. |

There's clearly some kind of bug with that detection too -- I frequently see topics as "unread" and find that the "unread comment" most recent in the thread is one I've already seen. I've also seen the "recent topics" window look like: read unread unread unread unread read unread But every time I come here, just open every unread thread in a new tab. I can't think of a way that I would read the most recent thread, but not the other threads...and in fact, when I visit them, I've already read them, but that information didn't get recorded. |

Post subject: | RE:Compsci Missing its Legend |
my guess -- some race condition between tabs, all trying to set a new set of values in the cookie. |

Tony: that would make sense, except that I could swear that different computers kept track of my read/unread status correctly (that is, I read article A on computer X, and it shows up as read on computer Y as well, so long as I'm logged in). Are you sure these markers never get stored on the server -- in a session variable or login variable? |

Not 100% sure, but when i clear out my cookies everything goes read. It is also possible that your CompSci.ca cookie maybe corrupted in some way. |

When the cookie is deleted shouldn't the topics default to unread? Like doesn't it store the read topics in the cookie, so wouldn't no cookie mean no read topics? As if you were a completely new user. |

It could go either way. Having all the topics become unread would be a bit more annoying as you would have to set them to read, having them go read means that you only have to worry about new topics or ones that you may have missed. I have not looked at the code for it in a very long time so i don't rember how it works, but my gueses is that the cookie just stores topics you have read since the start of the session not all time. |

Yeah but sometimes if I've read every topic, then the glitch happens I completely miss things, at least if they all go unread, I know that the glitch happened. |
