Hi Guys, I don't know about you, but I;ve never been able to stop spam. Redirect yes. Stop no. It occured to me as I was trying to block them at the IP level to create this idea. Unfortuneately I will never create it because I don't understand programing past the 100 "" 200 "" 300 "" Dos level programming, and I've pretty much forgotten most of the anyway Basically I want someone to create an email program that creates a personalized email link it would be something like "John" sends you email to "John@yourname.com" so you own an email address specifically for him. You would then have either a way to accept and create an email for him, or have something that sends an "opt in" it would mean you would have to have a personalized email address for each person on your list but This way you would know who the spam is coming from and give you the ability to block it. I know this may sound Pipe dreamy a bit, but if the obsticals are systemic and not the programming, so to speak, I'm pretty sure this could be something everyone can use. Any thoughts? |

It's allready been done. Even gmail supports this with the use of the "+" in an e-mail. For example: dan@gmail.com and dan+john@gmail.com should go to the same inbox but the second could be tagged as being from john and made to skip the spam check (or go right into the trash depending on how much you like john :p). You can do all this via gmails filitering options and for as many +whatevers as you like. Tho i don't think it made Google a billion dollars :p |

Spam blockers have become very sophisticated. I've never had a spam message get through gmail's filter. However, this does seem like a fantastic idea. This could fairly easily be added to any SMTP server so I doubt you could make any money off it (you'd have the satisfaction of making a bang in the tech industry I guess). The main issue I can think of is that people don't want to keep managing their friends. They already do on social networks and cell phones (and other places I don't doubt). EDIT: Damnit Dan! |

Then if freetrial.com sells my email I will notice that it goes to freetrial.com@myname.com? Also, is there a way to encrypt the email address so that only I know what it is? |

Your e-mail provider would have to support this. With Gmail myname@gmail.com and myname+freetrial.com@gmail.com would go to the same inbox. You could then set up filitering ruels to redirect all "myname+freetrial.com@gmail.com" e-mails to another e-mail, trash them, mark them as spam, never mark them as spam, star them, label them, etc. Quote: Also, is there a way to encrypt the email address so that only I know what it is? As tony noted you can put anything past the '+', it does not have to be there name or anything meaningfull. The only problem is some sites do not allow the '+' character in e-mails. However i blive gmail also ingores '.'s so you could do somthing like d..a..n...@gmail.com and it would still go to dan@gmail.com. See http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/03/2-hidden-ways-to-get-more-from-your.html for more info. I should also point out that if you own a domain such as yourname.com you can forword all e-mail @yourname.com to your inbox and then build filitering rules based on who it was sent to. This lets you make all kinds of crazy e-mails to give out and does not run in to the sites not allow '+' in e-mails problem. However if you do not have a good spam filiter or lack filitering rules, forwording all e-mails to a domain can fill up your inbox fast. |
