Start with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finite-state_machine which is basically what your game is.

this reminds me of my state diagram in digital circuit exam... we had to do one for a vending machine and mine was like around 15 states!! tht thing took a long time to draw..but ya i guess turing state machine is something similar as well.

There were a few choices that didn't work:even right at the beginning you can only go north or east as well; only south and west work. Then the boat, you can only choose left. Even if it just had a few sentences and then put game over at the end, it would be a lot better. You should also offer a restart option at the end after someone gets game over or beats the game. Otherwise, great job.
