Personally I never look at it, just wondering if I'm one of the rare people who do not as well. |

Since switching to Dorak, never. (unless I'm typing a long number, haven't gotten them down yet-- don't have a numpad) |

The problem is I never was taught to properly type. Cruddy schooling I guess. Demand for school work to be done on the computer came, forcing me to figure out my own method. I'm pretty fast regardless of how improper using a few fingers may be. |

I'm pretty fast regardless of how improper using a few fingers may be. Same goes for me I only use my first three fingers, except for my left hand, then then I use all 4 of them, probably because of guitar.... and can get around 75-80 wmp, with some spelling errors. |

If I'm typing with one finger while eating or something I'll look at the keyboard, but I don't usually. Online gaming + looking at keyboard = fail. |

unless i have to type a long number, i don't look at keyboard at all. but i agree w/ insectoid, whn i eat, i can't type w/o looking at the keyboard. my when both of my hands r free,,i cud go pretty fast. |

I do rarely, but on occasion because i'm using my laptop keyboard now instead of my (recently broken) USB keyboard, so the button spacing/size is different >.> |

Oh, that's right. If I'm working on someone else's laptop (as happens often due to my relative expertise) I have to look at the keyboard. |

Never on my USB keyboard... If I am on my laptop, then sometimes when the language auto-changes to french... Also when I have to type a really long number... |

I rarely look at it, almost never, unless when I'm typing a really long number or when I'm using French accents. |

Post subject: | RE:How often do you stare at the keyboard when typing? |
Nice thing about a mac keyboard is that accents are just alt+the most commonly used letter with that accent. For example, alt-e gives '?'*, and pressing any accent-able key will put the accent on that letter. It takes some time to get used to, but once you get used to it it's much faster than a regular keyboard (though I assume a french keyboard would be faster still). Damn, apparently the board doesn't like accents without letters. Alt+e +some letter gives ?, ?, ?, etc. Just like alt+i gives ?, ?, etc. |

@programming fun thats an awesome idea, no more caps lock n00bs on forums. (curious note, whenever anyone yells IN CAPSLOCK, do you actually press caps lock, or just hold shift. The only time i use caps lock is in video games lol) I look at the keyboard when using one hand, or if some reason i placed my hands wrong, and every letter is being screwed up (happens alot actually lol, they aer right distance apart, but the wrong letter) Also when I saw the topic name I thought you meant just sitting there staring at the keyboard, cuz I do that alot. And does anyone else open up the web to go to a specific site, then by the time google or w/e loads up, you forget why you opened it, and just type fdksafds or w/e and hit enter. I do it all the time. |

Post subject: | RE:How often do you stare at the keyboard when typing? |
In post-preview, your data is probably round-tripping though the server without ever hitting the database. Your browser sends the (UTF8, presumably) text to the server, which puts that in the returned post preview display without even thinking about it. When you actually post something, the post gets inserted into a database. If the database isn't configured for UTF-8 (including the database connection, sometimes), this will tend to jumble characters. Simply changing the encoding in your browser won't fix anything, since your browser is getting mangled characters back anyway. To fix this, you have to do the following: 1. Make sure the database is set up to use UTF8 characters internally. 2. Make sure your database connection is set up to use UTF8 characters. 3. Make sure your server is sending the appropriate HTTP header settings and page metadata to indicate to all browsers that it's talking in UTF8. 4. Make sure your server is sending the appropriate HTTP header settings to indicate that all POSTs should use UTF8 encoding. I did all this for a project I worked on over the summer because it had to handle multibyte characters, because it is being used to test software that needs to support multibyte characters. |

Oh, yeah, that's true, I did have to change the database setting too. I guess I forgot all about that because after I did that and it still didn't work, I spent the next two hours figuring out that I had to change the encoding too... |

ProgrammingFun @ Mon Dec 06, 2010 5:11 pm wrote: How does that work (how do you do that)? I always use the bumps on the F and J keys to position my hands... You're one of the few that does that, as far as I can tell. Very few people follow the rules for positioning your hands. I, for example, play a lot of games, so instead of the home row, my left hand defaults to (from pinky to thumb,) CTRL, A, W, D, Space. My fingers fall into the correct position as long as my pinky is on CTRL. My right hand is basically hit-or-miss. It's on the mouse if I'm not typing, and I trust my memory to hit the correct key when I need to type, so my right hand is often off by a key or two |

As The Guardian says, very few people follow standard. For instance since I program more than do anything else, my right hand shifts over to hit ; with my 3rd finger, and my pinky hits enter (The two most common keys for me besides space) I also use the period alot so I hit that with my 2nd finger. But when I get messed up is because I don't touch the keys till I press them , my hands just hover because they move around so much. So when I shift my right hand to press CTRL+SHIFT I don't always move my hands back to the right spot so I end up typing aS instead of sad (the middle letter I hit the caps lock) |

You don't need to follow the positioning rules to use the fact that f and j are bumped... I always just use those keys to figure out where my hands are then move them from there to wherever I feel like resting my fingers, easier than looking at the keyboard IMO, and results in less screw ups typing... |

SS1389 @ Tue Dec 07, 2010 10:12 pm wrote: What do you think of sound hard keyboards versus silent keyboards?
I personally prefer quieter keyboards, partly because I don't like much noise from my computer (even use tap-to-click instead of normal clicking lol), but also because I hate having to listen to people with damn loud keyboards and prefer being courteous to other people who hate the clickity keyboards too. |

I also prefer the silent ones...they are quieter and the keys are usually softer (easier to press)... |

I personally prefer the hard ones for coding and soft ones for other things..the sound and amount of pressure (hard ones) needed just makes every line seem real. ![]() |

Any thoughts on the Apple wireless keyboard? Battery life, comfortability etc. |
Author: | Insectoid [ Tue Dec 14, 2010 6:52 pm ] |
Post subject: | RE:How often do you stare at the keyboard when typing? |
The keyboard itself is nice (as are all Apple peripherals) but the lack of a wired model (correct me if I'm wrong) is worrying. I don't need a wireless keyboard. The batteries will die in the midst of something important and then I'm screwed until I charge it/find batteries. The price is also a bit obscene, considering it hasn't got any 'real' features. Apple's external trackpad on the other hand...I want one. |
Author: | jcollins1991 [ Tue Dec 14, 2010 7:41 pm ] |
Post subject: | Re: How often do you stare at the keyboard when typing? |
There are both wired and wireless keyboards. The wired keyboards have a num pad whereas the wireless ones do not. Both models are pretty nice, I have a wireless one and definitely think it's worth the money, it's nice and light, the only thing I don't like is going from a flat keyboard on my MBP to the slight tilt of the wireless keyboard. |

So you have a Mac then? I've been considering on getting one, the 21.5 inch i3 model, but I'm not sure if i3 is powerful enough and I've heard some stories about the screen. Apparently dust can easily lodge into it. |
