However it would be cool if there was a secret forum that could only be seen or accessed only with the key |

Cool, if you are not going to set that up again can you at least make it so a funny little icon appears beside you User post or something? if not you may as well just remove that who section cause whats the point then? |

The point is that it would take too much effort to remove something that most people don't know about. Also then we wouldn't have topics like this one. |

A system that rewards a high post count brings nothing but garbage into a forum. A +/- system is much more effective when not abused. To wit, a reference to Monty Python is not grounds for +karma. |

I never really liked the karma system in my defence. The bits system is really nice for applauding those who help you, even if it can't purchase any rewards. |

I looked after, when you do get an insane amount of bits, you can get some more or less useful things. However they are rewards for users that have spent great dedication to the site forums and is an active member. For most users though, these bits will just be useless. Karma system is Ok, but common, people arnt perfect and often can NEVER say what they really mean. I tend to miss read things ALOT and skip certain words often Hence I dont get what the person has really met. And then I flame the people because I may have missed one crutial word that can turn advice into what appears as a flame to me. 'Karma's a *****' lol. |

I happen to really like the karma system (though I'm probably biased because my karma score is pretty positive). I think that, in general, you'll find that the regular, consistently-helpful users of this forum (Tony, Dan, Btiffin, Gandalf and quite a few others) tend to have positive karma scores. Why some users don't have many positive points (methodoxx, for example) is beyond me. The negative votes seem to be primarily from new users who don't follow the harsher explanations of some members. Basically, I'm saying I don't think the karma system is abused here. The karma of a user is a reasonable measure of their ratio of helpful posts to unhelpful posts. I agree completely that post count is entirely irrelevant, as is time spent on the site (though there is an interesting effect where the longer-standing users tend to be the more helpful ones). What would be most helpful to quality of the forums is if there was some way of screening for a basic level of comprehensible spelling / grammar -- I know some members have a legitimately hard time with this, but they're generally pretty comprehensible -- but unfortunately there's really no way to do that automatically. What might be more useful is if there was a directory, on the front page, of the most useful posts to reference frequently. It's easy enough to look at the Tutorials page for your language, but it could take quite a while to find what you're after. An index of the most helpful tutorials could eliminate some duplicated work and make it easier for new users to look up their answer directly. |

I think that the Karma system is OK. Most of the karma given is done once and usually by new people who do not get the answer they want or code. I think you should be given karma automatically though like if someone marks a help topic as answered the contributors should be awarded something i guess if it was karma it would be excessive. |

The problem is, any system can be generally abused. no matter what the system is. I like youtube's system for the thumbs up and thumbs down thing, it generally isnt abused since you have to post a comment to why you put thumbs down. The same could be done for any post made too. for example: usefull__________________________useless Chuck noris built the log cabin he was born in (View all comments) -useless, User581: This is wayyyyyyyyyyyy offtopic -useless, programa92: wtf!? offtopic! -usefull, brainfart411: chuck noris powns So if for example if you have been given 100 'usefull' on different post, your karma goes up by one, same would work for negative karma too, and if maybe your usefullness score on a single post goes to -10 (useful - useless), an admin or mod is automatically contacted and the user's post can be removed or perhaps the user be warned. This would be a great system I believe. + I believe it would reduce how often people go off topic from a post |

@BigBear So, like the Turing Walkthrough for every language on here? (or at least update them) And if i follow you right, make the link more visible to new users (example: instead of making it a sticky, moving it upward one thread [where the user chooses tutorials/submissions/help]?). @copthesaint That actually sounds like a good system (the framework, the variables are negotiable). |

Except of course the part of creating multiple accounts to spam your enemies with useless selection thingies. There should also be an anomonious (You know what I mean) to prevent tit for tat relatitations. Except the admins would still be able to see who it was. |

Post subject: | RE:COOL! I just bought a runic Key Pendant, What ever that is! |
No. It would defeat main purpose of that system then. + I believe you cannnot make multiple accounts with compsci.ca, If it is like other forums, you will think you have an account, but none will see anything you post or do. I did this on another forum when I lost my password and had no proof the account was mine. Tried creating another account and I was * registered*, but none would answer me, so I started posting stupid things is main spots lol. I was screwed on that forum... |
