Hi, I was wondering if anyone is doing mecatronics at McMaster (or any university for that matter). My strength comes from the tech area and math area. My father already mentioned it to me and I'm very interested. Just want to know what it is like and certain requirements to get in there. |

I've started out in Mechatronics Engineering at Waterloo, before changing my major to Computer Science. It wasn't the right fit for me, personally. Too much abstraction, not enough programming. Most of the grads went on to work in SDE (software development) positions anyway. There are a few who went on to work with robotics (at grad level? It will prepare you well for that) were those who got involved in the robotics club and build things outside of class on their own. One of the main problems is that there are very few robotics jobs, and the field is not something that would trust co-op students... I think the Toyota assembly plant in Ontario was "the place" to go. There's an abundance of Software co-op jobs though, so your work and school experiences might start pulling you in different directions. |

At Mac, mechtronics is a combination of mechanical, electrical and software engineering. It tends to be a tough program because of the combination and the fact that you have to take both a thermo dynamics course and control systems course, not to mention one for power. But the mechtron courses are really fun, they have a lot of sick labs:D. You get to do a lot of C and Assembly coding, design a sopc, work with micro-controllers, build electrical circuits. Math is good skill to have in engineering, and as for marks, mechtron tends to have the same enrollment as engineering physics, so its pretty easy to get in. |
