I voted for the PS3. For me, it offers a lot more all-in-one features. It lets me play currently hyped games, interact with a network where I can buy my games, allows me to communicate with other games via PlayStation Home, interacts with my PSP and provides online gaming services to it via adhoc party, allows me to play older games on the PS1 and PS2 (older versions of PS3 only) and it gives me a central storage area for all my PS1 and PSP games (downloaded from the PlayStation Store).

Apart from the gaming related features I can also watch any modern movie, play music and view photos, install Linux, stay up-to-date with select news via Life with PlayStation, and more.

Being a university student that travels between home and school during weekends and breaks, the PS3 offers me a lot less hassle while moving, and saves a lot of space on my desk (compared to what could take up my desk space).

I'm not saying that the PS3 is the best console, nor am I saying that I do use other consoles to play games on (in fact I have used all of the consoles listed), but it is the best for because of all the functionality it offers.

I paid $500 for my system and it does everything I would need it to do. Not a bad price to pay in my opinion. Smile

I don't know the PS3 specs that well, so I will forward you to the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3_Hardware

What I forgot to mention about the PS3 is that you can replace the hard disk with most laptop suitable hard disks. You can also stream in media from a media server, or attach external storage via its USB ports.

In the future all three current generation consoles will have a motion controller. The PS3 with the "Arc" controller, the XBox 360 with Natal and the Wii with its system. It will be interesting to see how console gaming will change if any average person will be able to pick up any console and any game, and make a decent attempt at playing the game as the controls would be more natural. It works for the Wii, so why not other consoles as well?

@saltpro: So Steam's Community and Friends, in-game services, and friends matching are all for people with no friends, eh?

I would agree that xboxes are easier to set up for multiple people, but the experience playing on your own machine (with a correspondingly better screen / speakers / input devices) is preferable. I've had both XBox and PC LAN parties, and while the XBox ones are plenty of fun, I find it difficult to see what my character is doing, and irritating that I can only hear audio from the other side of the map since I'm not player 1.

Plus, the competitive gamers are primarily found on the PC. Want to play against someone ridiculously skilled? Go play some Quake 3 Arena against the pros and tell me how that works out for you.

If you count all PCs as gaming systems, I think they win hands-down. Everyone who has a console has a computer (or close enough), yet not everyone with a computer has a console. Many people have multiple computers as well, though having duplicates of the same console is rare.

In other news, the next counter-strike title from Valve will support keyboard input on the PS3, and
PS3 & PC players play on the same servers (Xbox players have to use the controller, and can only play against other xbox players online). Buying the PS3 edition gets you a free copy of the PC & Mac versions, which is neat.

My favorite console is the PS3. It may not have the most exclusive titles, but damn, it has the best. I like the controller more (that's a matter of opinion though) 'cause the xbox controller feels like a cheap plastic toy (I dunno why). Free online gaming is nice, when the server isn't being taken down by hackers, and it makes a damn good blu-ray player.

Aiming with a mouse > Aiming with a joystick

Author:  mirhagk [ Tue Aug 30, 2011 4:07 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:Which is your favourite gaming console?

walking with a joystick > walking with keys. On a keyboard you can either stand still walk or (on some games) run.

On a console you move at a speed relative to how much you've pushed the stick forward, giving you much greater control over how fast you move, and makes moving slowly/sneaking actually a challenge (rather than just making sure you hold a certain sneak button down)

Author:  Insectoid [ Tue Aug 30, 2011 5:37 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:Which is your favourite gaming console?

I've never really wanted to have that much control over how fast I move but when I play on my PS3 I kinda naturally use it. When I have it, I don't notice, and when it's gone I don't miss it. I don't play many stealth games, but I agree that it could be a very entertaining gameplay mechanic.

I have no opinion on this matter.

Post subject:  RE:Which is your favourite gaming console?

My point was just that both mouse and keyboard and controllers have their own merits, and which is better depends on which game your playing. For instance if there are a possibility for 20-30 controls (like an MMORPG or RTS) I generally prefer the keyboard (although there are exceptions to this), however if there are only a few different keys, I prefer something that gives a few easy to reach keys, ie a controller.

I do remember that stealth thing coming up once though, I played a mission in oblivion where you had to sneak through a cave filled with blind monkeys (so super hearing), and on the xbox version you had to go into sneak mode and then be careful not to push the stick too forward or they would hear you. On the PC version you pressed the sneak mode, and that was it. It made the mission so much less thrilling.

I think that accuracy is more important than walking speed b/c for walking, I don't really notice when playing on a console.

That's pretty sick. I started Oblivion, but couldn't get into it.

But uh, this is about consoles so we shouldn't be debating keyboard vs controller. Controller vs controller is fair game though XD.

EDIT: PC is in the poll, so I guess you can discuss it all you want.

I was going to say insectoid.

I guess it all is a matter of preference of mouse+keyboard vs controller. However the argument that you can aim better with a mouse applies only to individual people (as there isn't really any reason why it should be true, so long as sensitivity is high enough), and ever since they invented that little trick where the reticule slows down when passing over an enemy, it's been balanced out pretty well (see Halo 1)

It may not apply in specific people, but the argument also holds over a sampling of gamers. Every time someone tries to port a shooter between consoles and PCs, they either make it much harder on the PC, or much easier on the console. Most recently, I saw an article on how Monday Night Combat had to be rebalanced between the 360 and the PC: PC turrets build faster, aim faster and hit harder; PCs spawn more bots, and several abilities have far shorter runtimes on the PC.

Every time someone gets it into their head to let PC players play against console players, it's a short-lived bloodbath. Quake 3 tried this between PC and Dreamcast, and the summary is that even moderately-good PC players squashed the best Dreamcast players. There have been several more attempts since, each more forgettably disastrous than the last. This is specifically with shooters, though I honestly can't imagine it going any better if the game in question were an RTS. Maybe a racing game, or an action game.

Certainly the controller is better for games like Geometry Wars.

Post subject:  RE:Which is your favourite gaming console?

See the issue here may not reside in the fact that keyboard and mouse are better. Again it could be familiarity, or another huge possibility is a simple one. How many 10 year old's play COD on Xbox? How many 10 year old's play COD on PC. You'll find in general that those who do PC gaming are less casual on average, as they are the ones willing to drop thousands for a gaming platform instead of just $200-$300.

Post subject:  RE:Which is your favourite gaming console?

Age has little to do with it I think. Serious gamers play on a console 'cause that's where all the other serious gamers are. It's also where everyone else is, and it has voice chat and whatnot all set up. Nobody ever uses voice chat in all of the cod 4 servers I've played. You don't notice the kids because they can't easily make themselves known. PC gaming is declining; it's fast becoming a niche market.

Yeah, we all love our PC games, but more people prefer consoles, which are guaranteed to play the game (no need to look up specs you don't understand), relatively cheap, connected to a massive HDTV (I can't hook up my laptop to my TV, but the console is, well, designed for it), no need to install, etc. It's easy for parents to buy a console for the kids that's guaranteed to play the top games for the next 5 years, but much harder to pick out (and pay for) a gaming PC that may be old news next year.

I guess it's the parents' fault then, that console gamers suck, because they flood the demographic with kids!

Citation needed. That line has been tossed about by console manufacturers for the last decade, and it's never been even remotely true. While PCs are no longer the only game in town for high powered gaming, they are still a huge, huge market.

Besides, even if you had a lot of terrible players on the consoles because you have kids playing (though in my experience, kids and teens are usually better at these games than adults), that doesn't suggest that the top-of-the-line players will somehow be worse. I'm talking about professional players, here.

I can hardly wait to play new-CS against PS3 players, because that's going to be hilarious.

@GarryWilson what games are there that offer any significant differences between 360 and PS3 in terms of graphics?

And as for controls this article analyzes the two systems decently

http://gamer.blorge.com/2008/11/22/analysis-ps3-vs-xbox-360-controller-comparison/

One thing I may add to it though is that the person who analyzed these controllers may not be a programmer for these systems as his talk about dead zone assumes that dead zones are hardware based only. Most games ignore small movements in the thumb-stick, assuming that it is in fact due to wear and tear (notice a controller which moves slowly upwards on one game won't do the same on another). So the face that it's software based means that it's platform independent and the twitch time argument is invalid, leaving the controller with better resistance to wear and tear in the lead there.
