It is just that I was talking about the Necrothread card, and the person said that he didn't think it was useful. Thus a poll was born.

All of the other text components of the other cards don't seem as good.
"I agree."

They just don't capture the strength of the compsci uses. It tells you everything you need to know about thread necromancy, while still being a paragraph long.

I think it's good when used right, most of the time that I see it is when someone posts something useful in the thread, which, as far as I'm concerned is perfectly okay.

Turing_gamer, that's EXACTLY the search I used to find the picture originally. Anyway, I hit 'I don't care', 'cause really, I don't care.

Don't care. Necroposting is ok in a place like this where the threads stick around for as long as the disks slash ISP.

A little different for say Usenet. Posts are not retained in a consistent manner for Usenet groups on various servers.

I never mind reading through years old material. Programmers usually grok quickly, and google is making it a world where our internet knowledge base is worthy of decades of commentary in a useful form as it turns out. And yes I count the opinions of new, or weird or useless, people as knowledge base. Wink

Cheers

i think the self-moderating on this forum has gotten to extreme levels. do u guys rly need to point out when someone necros a post. who honestly cares? let the thread die rather than rebooting it without backseat moderating. its rude and unnecessary.

You'll notice that the mods tend not to stop the necroposting, maybe you should take the lead from them?

QFT.

If anything we lock the thread.

To moderators: If need be, to stop necroposting, add code saying if the post is 7 days old from latest post, then lock the reply system on that thread

The site already has this ability however we do not use it. Not all old topics are necessarily dead topics, opinion polls with no end for example are not meant to expire. In the case of help posts, some one coming back years latter and answering an unanswered topic may not help the original poster but it will help any one who finds that topic latter threw a search. Similarly tutorials and submissions may be updated or added to years latter by there creator.

If a post on an old topic is adding new content and information that is relevant to the discussion or issue, it's not normally considered to be "necroposting" by the mods.

A much bigger issue then necroposting right now are users spamming the site with short pointless messages which add nothing to the discussion and only serve to detrail topics. For example posting a "necromancy card", not only bumps that old topic to the top of the form again but starts a mini disscussion in the thread about if the post was necroposting or not, derailing the topic and ensuring that the topic is now dead weather that may have been the case or not.

If you think a post is inappropriate, spamish or necroposting you should report it to a mod and not commit the same offecen your self to point out that another user did.

Heres a tip: moderators of a computer science forum will not "add code" in order to deal with a problem only a handful of newer users seem to find annoying.

Thank you mods, for your years of displaying your power humbly.
