Should CompSci.ca have a Big Contest Like the CCC? Well we may not have great prizes but if you think about it most of the other ones dont have big prizes ether. Whould any one be intrested in somting like this? What kind of prizes whould you think whould be exceptable? (Note: we are very poor ) Should we invaule schools in this contest? Should it be for teams, inviduals or both (two difrent catogorys)? Should there be difrent levels? What progaming langues should be alowed? All of them? |

we definitely should have a contest. You can have it like the CCC style, mixed in with some of the DWITE approach, and have it in different divisions, so people who are more proficient with problem solving go at a higher level, and if they want to stay at a lower level, that's ok too. but then again, people have to make up contest questions, so there needs to be like a comittee of people dedicated to making up questions. also, we need to have restrictions setup, like how long will the contest be, who will administer it. Maybe we could do what they did on the DWITE? like open up a time slot, and you post up the question at that time, then let's say 2 hours afterward, you take down all questions and don't accept any entries. In that 2 hours, each person could only send in one program for each question, once you sent it, it's done, you can't send another program for that question anymore. This way, it would stop the jamming that DWITE contest had problems with. |

another thing, having a contest will attract more people to this forum. Especially people with good problem solving skills. |

well I'm definatly for organizing our own contest. Heck, I'll even take on the leadership role. 8) I do agree that it should be CCC style with DWITE approach. We'll invite schools, but judging should be done online by an automated script. Though ofcourse I'd like to heard from the rest of the community on the subject. |

CCC = WHAT?! |

CCC = Canadian Computing Competition (or was it Contest?) personally, I dont care about prizes, but anyways, for prizes, well I'm sure once we get this going, compsci.ca will receive recognition and whatnot, and if you say you won like 1st place off of compsci.ca, then the reputation could be prizes. We could also give off certificates, pretty looking ones that is. otherwise, think of it as a practice for CCC, and once you take CCC, then you can get that piece of paper they call a certificate then. |

yeah... we could sent out certificates. 8) |

becareful though, if you accept executables you might get a virus or simply something that would simply erase your harddrive |

lol, sortta like dwite? o and can we have fun questions, unlike the ccc ones? |
Author: | AsianSensation [ Tue Nov 25, 2003 9:32 pm ] |
Post subject: | |
well then, just send them the source if it's too much of an hassle to accept an executable. Remember, if you can only send in one piece of solution, and the thing doesn't have to marked on the spot, and provide that tony find a cheap ass computer in which he can run these code at, just in case someone disguises a virus in there, then we can always work things out. |

well dan has something like 7 computers in his room (i'm serious) so we'll most likely use couple of those for contest purposes. |

that whould be 7 and one laptop with the screen falling off, still holding on with some duck tap tho. i dont think we need marking on the sopt. probly more fair to mark the code anyway, then we whould at least know for 100% there is no hard coding or shit going on in there. also that way we could mark on things like good or bad progaming style |

*smacks dan across his face for stupidity* no dan, dont even think that. it would be impossible to hardcode answers to all datasets (just like in CCC - remember? 5 sets of data per question). Marking would depend on the style of the contest. Our beta contest will most likely not be marked on the spot, seeing as we're just getting into the whole thing, but if there will be enough participants... well I donno... we might install some kind of feedback system |

lol , maybe you guys can offer things as prizes that you already have. like one prize could be a free @compsci.ca email instead of having to get it for bits. just an idea |

We should say ppl with over 2 years of experience in turing should be excluded -_- |

I think that it is a great idea. Definantly attract alot of traffic to this site. We would have to see if the schools would promote it though. Possible Languages: -Turing -Java -PASCAL (I don't know it personnlal but I heard it was used for lots of contests) |

u list pascal and not c++?? wtf |

srry, I wasn't thinking strait, just that if u want to target high skools, most of them (to my knowldege) don't teach C++. They teach Turing, (and my skool does VB and Java) |

it'll only work if compsci.ca have makes an auto-judger. (btw only a couple of individuals are interested in contests -- they all say they are interested, but when it comes down to the actual competition, nobody bothers to do anything) so this is not going to happen. besides, there are enough contests around, such as topcoder, acm, uva, usaco, ccc, dwite... a perhaps more feasible idea is to have AI contests. but nobody is interested in these too |

dude alot of people would love submit there programs for a contest but we need to be given time to make/debug the program or else its worthless wat compsci needs to is majorly announce a contest all over the page like 2 months before judging then people can submit there program whenever they want until Judgement day(lol) the point is the fact that no one ever submits because its not big enuff of a deal, a contest should giving more attention and shure there are lots of of contests, but it we just be better if compsci has one...i cant explain y but compsci is kinda like our programming home |

dodge, we do have contest but not any with prizes, in those copntests you get the knowledge that you did better than everyone, you can gloat, brag watever, in this one there are prizes now i think there should be not AMAZING prizes, but maybe bits and a gift certificate or sumtin, as for programs, eat your heart out, chose what you like, however, depending on the program there should be different marking schemes, for example an amazing turing program should get a 10/10 but the same program in c++ should get a 3?10 as to the complexity of the program. the judging should be done by HARDCORE gaming fans as they will love to do this *not implying anything as i dont want to judge* maybe the mods can get someone that has large amounts of experience in programing and use him to decide how well the programs are structured and written. as a final thought i think you should put up a CCC you will get many entries |

We need some v3! I have also deleted tonys acount b4 but we try not to talk about that...... Yes V3 whould be nice, i am still aming for a beat verson at the end of christmass break. Speaking of google they say they are sending me a check this week.......... |

even though google is sending a cheque you should probably try to raise money other ways, google ads is a good idea but maybe you can promote other ppls sites, paypal has become popular and there are many other ways, posibly make your own products, i know sites that sell t-shirts or maybe sell @compsci.ca emails, many of the things in the shop coud be sold for $ so make a system in the shop where they can pm you and you can chanrge them to buy certain items (im just brainstorming what comes to mind first you dont actually need to listen to me) |

There's an idea. Compsci.ca could get a CafePress account! It's really simple to set up and totally free. If you charge above the minimum that CafePress insists on, the profits go straight to you. Easy, no? And I think stuff like that would sell-- who wouldn't buy a T-shirt featuring some famous Hacker Dan typos? Poleop anyone? |

without a doibt i would buy sumtin dumb err.... "interesting" like a tshirt that says "poleop sya i tyep bda" or "i signed up for compsci payed $10 dollars for this crappy t-shirt and all i got was this crappy t-shirt." or maybe sell like turing reference books or other program languages, maybe would be kool, also the book of typoas would be fun to buy |

Hey, back off. That's my trademark Hacker Dan typo! I guess that would be pretty hilarious for a t-shirt if I actually knew Dan personally and saw him face to face once in a while whilst wearing the shirt. But other than that it just makes us look geeky to people who don't understand it (and even to those who do if you think about it). But I'm sure there are other t-shirt ideas out there, good thinking. (maybe "dTeam, anyone?" ) |
