two degrees or one?

Hi

I am a second year student at the University of Regina. One of the options our Computer Science program has is a BSc in Software Systems Development, which I am enrolled in. It is kind of a mix between our Computer Science program and our Software Systems Engineering program (All the engineering degrees at the U of R are "Systems Engineering"). After I graduate the degree program I am in now I could return and complete either a degree in Software Systems Engineering or an Honors in Comp sci in under a year.

My question to you knowledgeable ones is, would this be worth it? Would two degrees make me more attractive to employers or would it just be redundant?

Thank you.

If they're both in software, I think it would be redundant. Computer Science graduates are given just as much importance as Software Engineers. Then again it really depends on the program being offered and on the kind of job you want to do. Certain jobs that involve critical applications, definitely will look at Software Engineers ONLY -- assuming your program trains you for this.

Upgrading to an honours would let you get in to a masters program more easly latter on if you should ever want to go a more academic route.

However i am not sure how much empolyers care about honours or 3 year vs 4 year degree.

If you're going to get two undergrad degrees I would only do it if they are two different fields, for example, physics and computer science. Otherwise go for grad school if you really want to keep in cs. PS if you are wanting to do a degree quickly after you are done, it is possible to finish a masters in a year and a half if you are lucky, and it seems to me it would be alot more useful than an extra undergrad in almost the same area.

By all accounts the job market for IT is good right now. Your time is probably better spent getting some real-world experience. But if the reason you are asking this question is that you have been looking but found nothing I agree that you should look towards your Masters. Meaning either an MBA in one year or spend at least two and get your Masters in CS (or related.)

I think getting two very similar degrees sends the wrong message. You are trying to say "I have a wide range on knowledge" but I think they will see it as you were scared to get a job, or get your Masters.
