I dunno how you interpreted that, but it looks to me like Linux is by FAR the most used OS on supercomputers. Just an img link so's nobody has to click; EDIT: okay, link didn't work...maybe because the image is an svg file. Ah well. |

Yeah, interpretation fail. Nobody who wants speed out of their computer tries Windows. |

In fairness, XP isn't too bad. Vista is about as slow as it gets though... Ubuntu with fluxbox instead of gnome is really fast, no matter what hardware you're using. It's just not that pretty. |

XP is still not supercomputer material. As far as I know, it doesn't run without a GUI (probably because it doesn't have any CLI worth starting up), which means it's wasting precious resources. Windows will probably never be suited to run on supercomputing systems - it's heavily oriented to user desktops, with some afterthoughts towards servers. |

windows is the tiny darker blue line between unix and linux. not sure on how to read the graph though, unix has the most area, but linux is in the higher numbers. anyway, windows looks to be one of if not the least used os for supercomputers according to the given graph. |

According to the proper Wikipedia page (please link this in the future), the image shows the portion of supercomputers running each operating system, with data points on a per-year basis. It shows that while supercomputers used to run UNIX for the most part, Linux has recently taken over. BSD use has fallen off in recent years, and neither Mac nor Windows has ever been a serious competitor. |

ecookman, would you happen to be colour blind? It appears as though Linux is absolutely obliterating every other OS on that graph. |

Why would you put Windows on a super computer? It's supposed to be fast and not BSOD you know... |

lol sorry, on my moniter the windows and unix look to be the same color. after changing some settings...oops but yea. Running windows on a SC seemed stupid to me. Just like everyone has said. |

I just figured I'd point out that there is a special edition of Windows called Windows HPC specifically tailored to this sort of application. That being said, it's likely not as customizable and definitely not as cheap as Linux. |

But you still read the graph wrong, seeing as in 2008 and to present, Linux is by far the largest fraction of the Supercomputer market. |

Just for a laugh, today's XKCD. ![]() No wonder Linux is most used on SuperComputers. Too bad it an't play flash perfectly (not that it's linux's fault completely). |

No doubt Windows is the largest used operating system in the world and if it is preferred for the Supercomputers it is not surprising. |

While Windows is certainly the most popular (for the time being) among desktops and laptops, that definitely DOES NOT hold up among servers or supercomputers. If your computer needs to be reliable, fast, efficient or secure, the general rule is that you don't even consider Windows. |

It's not their fault at all. I bet there would be millions of developers eager to make flash for Linux better. Too bad it's proprietary. [edit] On that graph, is Unix being used properly, as in being registered to use the trademark? Because most people would put BSD and Mac (osX) under Unix. |

Well i think he was refuring to the fact that the OPs claim was debunked in this thread and that the OP read the graph wrong. So it seems that Mazer is saying either you also read the graph wrong and failed to read any replys in this thread or you just read the subject of the thread and posted with out looking in to it at all. I don't think his claim was that you are stupid for using Windows (although it is posible he also holds that view) just that it is stupid not to read the replys before you post. I would say calling you and the OP stupid is a bit rude and uncalled for but he does have a vaild point. |

Now that's a valid point and therefore I don't mind someone calling me stupid. But I read few posts certainly not all of them so misunderstood. Thanks anyway. |
