Hi I was wondering if any one could help me with what kind of languages a grade 11 U computer science class in ontario would work with. |

You could be working with any of Turing, Visual Basic, C/C++ or Java. Other languages aren't out of the question either, but that list is the most common set. I personally worked with VB 6 (not a happy language). |

We did Java. Most schools in my area use Java or C++. I wish they did Python though. |

It varies highly from school to school. I had to sleep through another year of Turing. |

Please anything but HTML & VB6 (What my Gr.11 Class was) Someone mentioned Python, or Ruby would be a pretty interesting choice. |

Back in my day we had Watcom Basic and Commodore Pet assembler for my Grade 11 Advanced Computer Science class in Ontario along with some hardware like building our own adder or nand gate substitution. That was back in 1992 so there may have been an update since then. ![]() |

@jbking sweet! I wish we had CE at my school ![]() @Mentos Most likely Java/C++. My teacher's pretty lenient, as long as we get the work done he doesn't care what language we use. |

As you can see the language choices vary by city. Why do you want to know? I assume you are moving to Ontario and want to prepare yourself. We can help you better if we know more. As an aside I teach Python in grade 11. |

Or just stick with something simple. HtDP |

Go to the Ontario Curriculum website and look at the Grade 11U CompSci section in the CompSci pdf. |

That might or might not be a good idea. One of the views is that you'll be well ahead of the class (at least in terms of syntax) and not pay attention to the way your teacher wants you to approach your assignments. There's a chance that your own coding habits might clash with what is expected. It could be more interesting to play with a different language, so that you wouldn't end up learning the same thing twice. Besides, a lot of concepts are easily transferable between languages. |

so you are starting grade 11, I recommend you mostly focus on math if you want a career in computer science, with that said if you are intelligent and have common sense that programming course will be easy for you no matter what language they use. Just focus on having fun and getting girls. |
