Armagetron is fun. You'll need to either use a public server or set up your own though. The server's not hard to set up, but one of you will either need to not be behind a firewall, or be able to get a port forwarded. |

mabinogi FTW this is one of the best FTP MMORPG's i have found to play in a long time. It takes about a day of not stop play to get a high enough lv to stop all of the newbie quests, and actually have fun laying waste to monsters with a huge horde of guild members (biggest one I had was with 16 players and we owbed one of the toughest field bosses and jumped 3 lvs each on shared EXP) if you do decide to download it. add FDme and ecookman on marri server (both are my characters) i will be more than willing to help you out with all of you troubles (yea most people if you ask will be more than willing to help anyway, but i have played for a long time so i know some shortcuts). |

Ugh. The only thing that made CS any kind of bearable was banning the AWP and the auto-snipers. If you actually want to snipe, take the scout, or play CoD4, wherein sniping isn't broken. |

Tons of absolutely brutal things are popular, CounterStrike included. Slow paced, encourages camping, boring gameplay... Perhaps as a team based strategy game it's decent, but as a "fun" game... absolutely bad. Teehee, this is almost as fun as bashing console shooters. |

Good try, and predictable, try...  Like I said, when played in an organized manner, CS may work as a strategy (or better put: tactical) game. However, I'd rather go with chess than CS for that purpose. Otherwise, it's a slow paced reflex shooter.
Euphoracle, you've clearly not played Enemy Territory enough to make a judgment about it... There are many mods, the best of which allow you to disable ranks, and bring out the better aspects of the game such as it's focus on objectives rather than "plant the bomb... 10 times in a row..." And you didn't just compare a video game with a sport, did you Analysis Mode? The only similarity between the two is that they can both be played either for fun or competition. Also, I don't recall ever talking about the entertainment value of watching a game, but rather playing it... PS. +1 for moving this to Off Topic. PPS. I played ET for about one and a half years. I am aware that ranks can be saved, however, on the servers that I played on, and I guess the mod progress at the time, it was temporary at most, lasting about 48 hours, and then it would be cleared. It's all fine and nice that mods make the game better, but keep in mind that I played on servers without insulting amounts of mods :> Also, Temple is the best map ever and I don't care what anyone says, that shit was fun. Edit: Corrected timeframe, just checked. Also, it wasn't a particularly fast game when compared to other, faster games like CS or Team Fortress, or somesuch. It's not slow but I didn't find it fast. |

Well I'm not going to argue preferences, but it looks like you've had a pretty limited experience of ET. From what I can infer, you're talking about 32< player servers, probably stock etpub, large maps (ie. Temple), with ranks saving for a day or two (which, AFAIK usually accumulates quickly). I'm talking about <16 player servers with etpro, medium-small maps (ie. Supply Depot), and no ranks enabled. It becomes a completely different game under these conditions, and no... it doesn't take any more mods than what you're probably used to. By CS being slow paced I mean that gameplay consists of walking slowly, twitch shot, camp, walk slowly, twitch shot, plant bomb... This is not a fast paced game by almost any means. |

Armegatron is perhaps the best game to play Lan during computer science class when you've finished all your work. If you learn how to mod it, it's pretty versatile too. Tons of fun, and if, like mine, your teacher hates shooting games and won't let you play them, well, it's rather tame (lotsa core dumps though! (yes, I know (vaguely) what a core dump is)) Nested brackets ftw |

FPSes are overrated. Quake 3 on free for all death match was good enough for our CS class. This game is so casual, yet fast paced. I miss the good old days when games like Age of Empires 2, starcraft, diablo, warcraft 2 and command&conquer were popular among my friends. |

Yes, I meant modern FPS-es are overrated. The genre has been overdone. We get too many new FPS-es yearly, and they don't seem to offer much more than what they offered last year. This may be an over exaggeration, but it feels like the only thing new they advertises things like "we now have an HDR system" or "we now feature a fully functioning cover system". These things are great, but it feels stale. When I hear that, I say "meh that doesn't add much". I have a preference for the older games, because back then it really felt like they were taking a risk and bringing in innovation (this is in the context of that time period). Today, it doesn't feel like anyone is trying to take risk. They seem to just copy each-others small incremental improvements. To be fair, left 4 dead and portal felt really fresh, they took a risk by trying something new, that's why they will be remembered and people will still play them 10 years later (In 10 years will something like CoD1,2,3,4 or 5 be remembered/played? I doubt it, people will be busy with CoD 15  ).
What upsets me a bit is how the RTS genre hasn't seen much innovation in a very long time, and how we don't see too many new RTS-es anymore. I am hoping starcraft 2 will be just amazing. |
