Broken PS3

I'm not sure if there is already a topic on this (but i did search for it)

My PS3 broke 1year and 1 day after i got it. what happened was that I put in Little Big Planet and right after the Playstation 3 thing came up it froze, so i restarted it and then it would not read any disc that I put in. So i called Sony and they said it would cost $190 to fix it. And since it was a Christmas gift and it was bought 3 weeks prior to when i got it for Christmas, the warranty was out. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

Hmm, I think you should contact consumerist.com instead of us. They might be able to help you.

I didn't even know of this site

But what i want to know is if this has ever happened to someone else, not how to fix the problem (my PS3 is already fixed)

Actually this exact same thing happen'd to me about 2 weeks ago. Froze, and hasn't been reading discs since. Weird... ive had it a little over a year aswell, this problem is very common.

I have an Xbox 360, 4 months, no problems so far, and even if it breaks well my dad's work sells them so I can get it refurbished for free Wink

There is random speculation of something called the Sony Timer.

just wait for another 8 months an it'll probably will have broken

every single one of my friends that has a 360 has had to either get anew one or get it fixed due to hardware failures
non of my friends that have a PS3 have had to get it fixed

Okay, I hope we all understand the difference between "anecdote" and "sample sizes", right? Well, an anecdote is a sample-size of one, and is therefore, unscientific to draw conclusions from. Same for sample-sizes of a few friends. The problem is that the human brain adds significance where none actually is. You look at the time it broke and see that it was coincidentally beneficial to Sony, so it looks suspicious. But consider random chance. Let us say we have a batch of 1000. 100 of those 1000 will fail with a gaussian distribution within a year. That means that 33% of that 100 will break very shortly after the 1 year warranty mark. That also means there is 33% that break very shortly before the warranty mark. Then consider which we will hear about more, and also place more importance on: the ones that break after.

Its a self-confirming bias, just like "prophetic dreams", because we only remember the dreams when a coincidence happens, but we never remember the hundreds, even thousands of times our prophetic dreams got it wrong.

This is not to belittle your stories or accuse anyone of making things up. Just to point out that due to these considerations, you have to take these stories with a massive grain of salt. Asking on a random compsci forum will not give you conclusive answers. If there really was a problem, consider what a group like say Consumer Reports(which owns consumerist.com) would do if they heard about this problem with the PS3s. They would talk about it, and the other news groups would definitely pick it up.

yeah my friend had this problem too.
not wanting to spend lots of money to have it repared...he used the good 'ol smack it 'till it works method, (not recomended) and it now works.

@ashiphire
i know someone who has had their 360 for about 2 years, and still no RROD.

Cross your fingers and knock on wood. Those old models have faulty motherboards that are even worse than the newer ones they have now.

lol if i want a ps3 i'll get one, I'm thinking about it actually because my ISP has blocked Xbox Live unless I pay an extra 20 a month subscription fee, yet wireless gaming on my brother's Wii works fine Sad I hate the ps3 controller though too, grr decisions, decisions...

This is smart. For $600 you can have a nice gaming machine. The only setback is that your friends will still be playing 360 or PS3.

Why not get a decent ISP instead, I wouldn't tolerate something like this.
