Euclid Contest Preparation

Hey guys, i know there are many of us here waiting to be admitted for UWaterloo and will be writing the Euclid Math Contest whether it be for admission help, or scholarship chances. Anyway, thought i would create a thread where we could discuss problems and such to help each other.

Here is the Information for the contest (dates and such): http://cemc.math.uwaterloo.ca/contests/euclid.html
Euclid eWorkshop: http://cemc.math.uwaterloo.ca/contests/euclid_eWorkshop.html
Past Contests: http://cemc.math.uwaterloo.ca/contests/past_contests.html#euclid

By the looks of it, it looks a lot easier than the Sun Life Financial Canadian Open (in my opinion) since it is more math skills, less grinding/ problem solving on the spot.

So let the games begin.

I'll probably be back in a bit with some sequences and series questions since these are what i seem to need the most practice on.

if you're in grade 12,(and are taking calc and vectors) you should be able to do most of the problems... looking over the past contests the only thing that i wouldn't be able to get is the data stuff, and i've borrowed someones notes to read (didn't take the course...)...

Post subject:  Re: Euclid Contest Preparation

I wrote the euclid since grade 9...it is relatively easier than the open, I agree..

I got a 65 on the open this year and I am hoping to get >85 this year on the euclid...

the euclid is basically testing your knowledge on the school curriculum, thats why universities look at it a lot as opposed to other contests.

one main factor in doing well on the euclid (apart from actually solving the questions) is time management...making sure to split up the questions into chunks (for example, 1->4, 5-> 8 and 9 -> 10 is a good way of dividing the questions in to groups of increasing difficulty) and set a 'goal time' in which to finish each of them by.

doing the past contests really help, as they give you a feel of the contest's difficulty/formatting

a lot of people tend to write too much on the full solution questions (guilty as charged!) .....just show what is needed and don't elaborate...

as the contest approaches, Il'l try posting some good practice questions if people want any.

@saltpro15 do u mean 35/80 ? or 35% of 80?

Author:  endless [ Fri Feb 27, 2009 2:52 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:Euclid Contest Preparation

yea it seems like the data management stuff is the only stuff i haven't really seen before, so i will be focusing on the sequences and series eWorkshop to learn that stuff. also, it doesn't look like they test too much in calculus which is nice since we are just in calculus now.

Canadian open wasn't hard at all for me. The only questions I didn't get were the ones I hadn't been taught to do. For example, one of the questions was

there is a 4X4 grid. A token starts in the bottom right corner. It can move 1 place every 'turn' directions up or left, until it hits the top left corner or goes off the grid. What are the odds of it hitting the top left corner?

It was worded far better than what my terrible memory can recall, though a simple binary check will work. It takes 4 moves exactly to get to the end, 2 must be up, 2 must be left. so, if up = 1 and left = 0 it is easy to go through every possibility as long as you can count in binary.

For a lot of the contests, you don't get 'taught' it in high school at all! Like for example in the AMC, AIME, CMO, and even some questions on the Open, you have to teach yourself the material (well, mainly from past experience in writing these contests and practice)

On the Euclid, there's usually a logarithm question near the end (9 or 10). I was in grade 10 last year and I got 75. I made two stupid errors, one was not reading the question and only answering part of it (it was the area questoin, questoni 4 or 5) and the other one I forget.

That theorem is called Apollonius' Theorem (a special case of Stewart's Theorem). you can go look it up. It's funny how I knew that theorem (I memorized a page of triangle and circle theorems that I didn't know, like Brahmagupta's Formula, Ceva's theorem etc. and some kid who was writing the contest that day asked my friend to put up a random theorem on the board and it just so happened to be this one) and didn't get the question. I attribute it to the fact that I misunderstood the question (i thought it meant I had to make a triangle with the midpoints of the triangle and it would be similar, instead of taking the medians and using them). Stewart's theorem makes the first part trivial and the second part easy, but the third part is still difficult.

u can use cosine law though.

Author:  A.J [ Sat Feb 28, 2009 1:31 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Euclid Contest Preparation

I solved it (after the contest, sadly, since I misunderstood the question just like Analysis Mode did) by reflecting one of the vertex of the triangle and stretching the median to touch the reflected vertex. The diagram then becomes a parallelogram. Then, all you have to use is the property : The sum of squares of diagonals is equal to a sum of squares of four sides.

Using this, you are pretty much done the problem.

so it's now getting very close to the contest (next tuesday) and this morning i decided to look up last years average on euclid and these are the numbers i found.

Average (Mean) 46.4
Certificate Cutoff 56
School Medal Cutoff 46
Number of Contestants 16108

does this mean that the average was actually 46.4/100? i mean i know the comc average was in the 40's, but it seemed by looking at previous tests that the euclid would be around a 70 average. just wanting to see if i am reading this correctly.

@ dark just skip it, ur presentation mark probably won't count toward the 2nd term ouac so doesn't matter. just try harder to bring ur marks up later so that ur mark won't drop that much in the final.
I'm also skipping a physics quiz tmr which means 0 on that quiz.

and i was looking at past contests...

did 2008 and 2007 already i estimate i would get 8/10 questions on 2008 and 7/10 questions on 2007 (i counted my answer as right if my steps are right except just made stupid mistakes)

if the pattern follows i would get 9/10 on tmr's euclid Smile

That would be a horrible idea. Marks are still being submitted and the English presentation may or may not be part of the second term university mark. Furthermore, bringing your mark up after suffering a big blow is not as easy as it may seem. Getting a 0 on something significant will probably destroy whatever mark you were trying to achieve and not be able to bring it back. Lastly, English is probably one of the courses that most universities pay the most attention on and so I would not be trying to 'game' it. That would also depend on what mark you are getting since you might risk it if you have a sufficiently high mark in the course - though I don't recommend it.

I would think universities would look more towards your actual marks rather then a contest score (Though, I'm not sure if this is true. Perhaps PR, in the case of waterloo, can give more information there). In conclusion, Dark, do your english presentation since it will probably be more important then your contest score.

LOL i'm just the opposite, more probability and less trig plz. and please give a question that would require calculus.... I felt that calculus is so useless when doing the contest. only time i used it is to find the vertex of an equation though if it's in standard form -b/2a is faster.

not sure about other schools but for our school teachers have already submitted the marks to the main office where they'll be ready to be sent to OUAC by the 17th. for final mark it won't matter that much as long as ur mark won't drop over 5%. the quiz that i'm going to skip will only drop my mark by 3% so basically i can still just maintain my current avg and be ok for university.

For me i think writing the euclid is more important than losing a few % for final mark which universities won't care about...

Does anyone know how much work you have to show for full solution questions? I'm not sure if i have enough stuff on the answer. For those questions I just wrote out every step in getting into the solution but almost never bothered to explain what i'm doing. my answer is like 95% math and 5% english. while i see the past contests solutions are 75% english 25% math.

also for question 10 i didn't show any step at all... cause I can't really explain how i got the equation. I just thought of it logically and I came up with an equation right away. I'm sure i got 10a and 10c right. though didn't have much step for either of them. wonder how much i'll get....

for 9a, you might get 1 (if not 0) as the cross multiplying is only the start of a whole solution. For 10 a), just an answer should suffice, but for 10 c, you might only get 1 or 2 marks (as I think 10 c is worth about 5).

What is the equation you got, btw?

Did badly, messed up 5b, 6b, 7a, 7b, 9a, 10a (and I did know how to do all of them). Other than those, i did (successfully) 1,2,3,4,5a,6a.

MAde more mistakes than last year.

so i guess we can talk about details now.
what did you guys get for the integer n where 100<n<999 sum of digits is 24?

i got 10/899, but probabilities aren't my forte, so wanting to know if i made a stupid mistake.

There are 900 numbers, not 899, because the range includes 100. and it's 100<=n<=999.

it's 10/900 or 1/90.

lol, ouch. i had a feeling that i got that wrong, but by that time i was doing quick answers for the short answers, and trying to scribble stuff down for the long answer questions i hadn't done yet.

so how did you guys do 6. b), the physics question?

the closest i got was carrying v on the distance through until it cancelled out, but my answer was unrealistic.

You know GF is 45km (60*45/60), so let t be the time the two took to intersect, and x be Bob's speed. You know that x*t=45 and 60t+45=45+20/60x (total distance traveled). You have 2 equations, so solve for x, which is 90km/h
