http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7740484.stm You know when I used to watch those science fiction cartoons about how in the future everything is going to be taken over by robots? Well, when I learned comp sci and how programs work, I find out that this will never happen, unless the programmer purposely made the robot "evil" but now that I read this article I felt like this might actually happen. But anyways, with this new field in computer science. It motivates me even more into going into computer science. Building "brain-like" computers is just so cool |

I found the CNN Hologram (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thOxW19vsTg) to be pretty damn "futuristic", its pretty damn crazy and good Oo Beats Star Wars I knew holograms were possible, but just not this clear which is crazy. So yeah, the future is near...bio computers, matrix..? |

see this is where you can be wrong what if someone makes a self learning and evolving AI this is what we are trying to strive towards and if we make someting as smart as us that can get smarter well then there is a problem |

But this is where YOU can be wrong. Don't you think we can limit the learning it can accomplish? The current goal for IBM is to make a computer with the thinking capacity of a cat. Cats are in no way smart enough to do anything to us. also; said computers would have t be fitted with tools capable of doing harm to us, something one certain country would try to do. About the hologram- the surrounding blue glow makes it rather cheesy, and suggests that it is a fake. |

[rant] First. @ insectoid, Outfitting a computer with tools of destruction would be done by every country that could. Instead of a human piolit, we could have a machine one that does not suffer for altitude sickness or blackouts when diving at a steep angle. Hence they would be perfect piolits. Or soldiers that would not get cold or warm or sick. or tanks that are a lot smaller or carry more firpower/ammo. Second. @ecookman, Who the hell would be stupid enough to program a computer to learn to kill it's creators????????? If you want to do that, have fun. When it kills you, ill be sure to mourn your stupitity before taking a Sledgehammer to the computer. Third. This is all hypothetical anyway. Soooo....... I say that it will be interesting to see the outcome of this experiment. If we can build a computer that thinks like us, we could build a space ship and send the computer out in it to try to meet other life (if it exists... (Spore)) or send it to operate deep sea mining rigs, where Humans are unable to go. [/rant] |

The ultimate idea of machine learning is abstract learning. A common theme in science fiction is that a machine is developed enough to learn and make decisions; and then it "logically" determines that "killing it's creators" is the best solution for one of it's given objectives. |

I was watching the Science channel a while ago and I saw this thing where they took neurons from a rat and laid a specially built CPU on top of it. It quickly formed neuropathways and was able to communicate with the CPU with electricity. I am unclear how it works but they connected it to a flight simulator and it crashed at first. But each time it tried the simulator, it got better and eventually taught itself how to fly. Here is the Youtube link for it. Click here. |

Wow, that is actually really interesting. A petree dish able to fly a jet, not bad. Just wait, one day, we'll all have implants to control everything wirelessly, like Jedi :0 |

Haha! That would be cool. But realistically, this neuron thing has a lot of applications like pilot-less planes and smart computers. Maybe they can create a hybrid CPU which features the thinking ability of a brain with the calculating ability of a traditional CPU. |

a) what kind of feedback is the peetree dish getting in order for it to "learn" what not to do? that seems extremely far fetched to me. and b) to go back to that stupid CNN "hologram"... i cant believe that actually tricked some of you. wolf blitzer is standing in a entire green room, that cheezy blue glow around the other person is simply a bad representation of what a hologram would look like. That person is CGI'd in from another camera shot, and wolf cant actually see him/her. |

if you look for a vidoe alled shift happens..)there are different versions too that go more in-depth) it states that we are in a time of amazing growth in the computer world. something like technology is now doubbling it's capacity every 2 years (like dual cores..they have quadcores now {2 dualcores as 1} and in new high end desktops you can find octocores {2quad's or 4 duals}) it has been estimated that by sometingg like beween 2010-2021 a $4000 laptop will be smatrer than us and between the 2050's a $1000 low en laptop will excede the knowelge of the human race scarry eh {back to th topic} since in the next30 years or soa cheep laptop is smarter than ALL OF US!!!! it is highly plausable that they will be out superiors...just look at the matrix movies...could happen it already is |

Just because there will be hardware that benchmark on par with human brain, does not mean that there will be software (other than video game graphics) that will take full advantage of it. |

true but by that time you would think they have a hybrid figgured out |

Tony has a point. Even though the hardware is more powerful than our brain, there really won't be any software that will allow it to "think" or visualize things the way we do. |
