The saddest part here is that there are some rumors that there student government dropped it becues they claimed it only effected "white men". A\V @ 26th November 2008, 11:39 am wrote: Thsi is what happens when people try to get involed in "politics".

They dropped it because they were told it only effected white men and they felt that they shouldn't support research that only effects one group. I have a feeling they support breast cancer research... This is why political correctness is a bad thing. |

In there defnece it is rather hard to stop group think on board of directors for such orgigsations epstaly where there are extream influences from special intreset groups. It's very easy to get cought up in one way of thinking and only seeing the issue from one view point. It would be intresting to see the minuites from what ever meeting it was they decied this in. |

Dropping support for a disease because it only affects white people? This is a joke, right? It's like dropping support for sickle-cell anemia because it mostly affects black people. |

Here's my challenge for you: count how many breast cancer posters, ads, commercials you see. Then count how many you see in the same time frame for prostate cancer. Funding for diseases is inherently politicized. Plus, you know, breasts are beautiful... men really aren't. ![]() |

Of the people I know here at Carleton, a very high percentage of them are angered (at a minimum) by this choice. Just as md and rdrake have pointed out, there are all kinds of things out there that require research, but only show up in a mostly core group of people. My personal opinion? It's complete and utter bullshit. |
