as Dan Clements, founder of CardCops (online banking security or something... not sure) nicely puts Quote: AOL users are the newbies, so they're way more susceptible to these scams. Apparently some woman from Ohio was mass mailing spam to AOL users saying that "last attempt to bill the recipient's credit card had failed", and included a link to an "AOL Billing Center" webpage, where an online form demanded the user's name, address, credit card number, expiration date, three-digit CCV number and credit card limit. Well the fact that such Billing Center is not on aol.com domain should strike a bell. And the fact they they ask for your CC limit should just make you wonder how much they planning on charging ![]() Anyways, it all ended when she mailed an FBI agent specializing in computer fraud. Heh, my broadband costs as much as AOL dialup, and I can also check my email and chat to friends 8) @ 100x the speed ![]() source |

btw - No More AOL CDs . com is still collecting. Over the 2.5 years since they started, they collected 230,000 AOL CDs. Looks like they just might hit their 1 million goal by the year 2010 ![]() |

My friend Ian's collecting them and making a curtain out of all of them. I think he's at somewhere around 200 (I could be wrong, but I'm sure he has at least 100) |

It's kind of funny when you think about it...AOL's site lags really badly. Plus their site is ass. And they have advertising on it. Just to show what kind of people they're aiming at...they have two offers on their site for AOL 8.0...one for 1045 'free' hours, another for unlimited 'free' hours. And there's no 'Why go AOL' link... funny that. |

I was on aol for like... 8 years up untill like last month. I was in no means a newb, or a moron or anything like that. My parents simply would not spring for boradband, I finally got them to get it, cause I thought "Ill stay online all the time, and tie up the phone line" it worked. Were on sympatico, and I download at 200+k/s most of the time. Its better than sex. |

hey Corybu, didnt mean to offend you or anything. Its just that AOL users are assosiated with newbs because generally old and very young people fall for those "all my friends are on AOL, why dont I join so I can send them emails" commercials. also the fact that they got a shitty mandetory browser and a price as high as my DSL ![]() |

Yeah, everytime we go to Radio Shack or whatever we take the whole pile of AOL cds. I hate AOL, and I hope that the company gets trampled by a rabid hoard of n00bs. |

i remember delivering the aol cds for "the Record" (my local newspaper)...and i would always keep like 50 or so and use them for frisbees and for putting drinks on the best was when they used diskettes cuz it would eliminate the need to buy blank diskettes...insert disk....format a:....wow!!! a blank diskette ![]() |

yeah, diskets were somewhat acceptable. Though now you cant get them. Even if you call them and ask for one, they wouldn't send it to you. I remember reading about some guy who called in and said that he wants to subscribe to AOL, but his computer is old and doesnt have a CD drive. Asked if they could send in a floppy for him to install and they said "no". ![]() |

The ultimate suicide. Split an AOL cd in half and slash your wrists with it. The headline: AOL one ups GTA in the suicide category. |

or you could save the AOL Cds and send them to a third world country, Im sure the kids there are in desperate of toys and accesories. just imagine, for each AOL Cd you send over, you will be making a kid in Congo very happy. I guess there are uses for AOL Cds afterall. |

Aol wouldnt be so bad if you could close the main window, and still surf using IE or something. Aol freezes at almost everything when you use it to surf, and it limits download speed to like 3k/s cause it has to refresh the damned welcome screen all the time. If you could use just IE and have a sign on similar to Sympatico, you could probably get 6-10k. Which is great for just e-mails and messenger programs. I tried to play Unreal Tournament online on AOL... it sucked, because everyone has like 20 or less ping, and im up at like 200 or more, I was getting wasted, and now im down with the 20 somethings, and its awesome. I think that aol had the potential to be a good internet program, if they could keep up. Spend liss time advertising, and more time and money to make a good product (Like Sympatico, or Cable) and they could be good. I want to get T1 running to my house... Or SONET... Mmmmmmm hehe. If you dont know what SONET is, it is (as far as I know) the current fastest network connection available right now, if you could get that on a pc, and connect it to the internet you could potentially download (1 terabyte/s I think... Its been a while since Ive checked. I saw it during a class in my CCNA course...) Its nice though, lol. oh well, im rambling lol. Ill stop. |
