I'm wondering if there is any interest in a play-by-email diplomacy game. Rules are simple, it would be one turn per day with me adjudicating (not playing this round). It'd work best with 7 players, however if there is enough interest to do it with fewer then that could also be arranged.

For rules, etc. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_(game)

Never played before, but I'm always open to trying new strategy/negotiation games (Mafia/Vampire/Wereolf is also a good one for forum play)

If this does get started, I'm curious what'd you'd use for map respresentation and changes?

The email, just use paint to modify the board.... of course this would require the players to be honest. md, you said you'd adjudicate, so every move would be cc'd to you for verification and adherence to the rules.

This sounds very interesting. I will be checking back on this

There's a free-ware php version of this game you can download.

@apomb: The rules of diplomacy are deterministic, so assuming that md was intending to be the referee, the players couldn't be dishonest.

Of course, md would probably like to play, so perhaps phpdiplomacy would be a good choice.

I'd play, but I'm busy enough as it is; I'd only bog down your game in missed turns and "sorry it's late"s.

Turns would be one per day... so missing one is a bit hard Wink

No, it really wouldn't be: I'm in another city, completely away from any computer every other weekend. I'm also hosting a play-by-message-board campaign (DnD) and I'm a bit of a slacker about that, so...thanks anyway?

Oh... yeah that might be difficult. So far it seems that there isn't a lot of interest anyways Sad

If compsci.ca doesn't get you enough interest, you might try posting on one of the many play-by-message-board groups around, or on an appropriate newsgroup. Your best bet would probably be reg.games.diplomacy, though it doesn't appear to be the most active group ever.

so that's 3; we could do this with 5, so two more.

Or I'll work on phpdiplomacy and then we need only 1!

Ok, I've installed phpdiplomacy on my server and setup a game.

All you need to do is register and join it.

http://nxor.org/diplomacy/board.php?gameID=1

It's set for 24 hour phases, so it should give people plenty of time to think things through.

Wow, the nerdiness level has reached an all-time high for this site!

I looked at this and thought, Who names a game 'Diplomacy'? That sounds so boring!

I'm not much for this type of game, I prefer shooting unending hordes of zombies with no hope of survival.

If you have nothing positive to contribute then please go stuff yourself in a hole.

More (bad) news! I'm unable to resolve the problems that Saad and some others were experiencing. I couldn't even trace the error because of weird things that looked much like voodoo.

However! phpDiplomacy does have it's own install and site, so I have recreated the game there for all to join if they so wish.

Just register and then use the following link: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5233&join=on&gamepass=c34e9a6dec806cc6cc59ef18c9f6916b

Long story short, I'm in Saudi Arabia (visiting family) and censorship seems to be everywhere on the net and the reason listed for it being blocked was porn. I guess they have crappy filtering or are trying to shut themselves from the outside world.

Other sites that were/still blocked from the top of my head
