Post subject:  Why did you become a developer?

Today I wrote a post about why <a href="http://devjargon.com/development/15-reasons-i-became-a-developer/">I became a developer</a>, and I was wondering why you guys became developers.

I'm going to be compiling a list of answers and posting on my blog later on so tell me if you want to be included in this (and if you have a blog that you want linked provide it).

That's a typo. It's supposed to say "clicks".

I become a developer because - well - I just enjoy programming and while I'm not the best around here, IMO I grasp the concepts well, and enjoy understanding it. I made my decision in grade 8 Razz

I'm not a developer, so i guess i can explain why i am not becoming a developer. I am not becoming a developer simply because I dont enjoy it as much as I used to. I;m more of a hands-on learner/worker. Hardware is my real passion.

What kinda hardware?

Go cry to your mother(board), wuss! Programming is for real men.

Actually, I've found tinkering around inside computers quite fun. The only thing is that hardware is expensive. Compilers are free!

agreed, except instead of hardware insert research Smile

Born to it. No good at anything else.

The full colour glossy for the TRS-80 Model/I had me hooked. It was far too late by the time I saw STNG: Samaritan Snare

As the Pakled's say.

REGINOD: "We need their computer things."

Lol. Didn't they turn out to be smart in the end ?

Well, I guess why I want to be a developer is because I enjoy computer science, and there's nothing else quite like it.

sure there is, theres data input specialist, you sit at a desk, typing all day, doing what your boss tells you to do. many office jobs are like that.

also, I enjoy electronics mostly, not generic computer hardware though.

motors, switches, transistors, digital logic boards. not the conventional cpu/memory/graphics/motherboard type... though i dont have a problem with that kind of "tinkering" also.

If im going to do programming, id rather do VHDL or C rather than webdev/Java/Application development

i think im leaning more towards robots, yeah... we'll see though. its quite the open field.

Ah yes, lego mindstorm!

You do PLC's, apomb?

You're right, I think if I became a developer, it might be a boring office job. You recommended VHDL or C, what would jobs involving vhdl or C be like?

Well, any new factory would require VHDL or some variation therein to govern the logic of the many switches and timing sequences. Also, the electronics inside vending machines, non-PC based kiosks, security keypad electronics, and any other microelectronic-based devices require low-level programming, as opposed to programs that interact with an operating system.

And to answer Aziz, I will be doing PLCs this year, i've looked at some of my friend's PLCs before, and they seem pretty straight-forward. as long as you know the symbols lol. I could definitely see how they could get complex fast though.

Well I'm not a developer yet but I can say I would like to eventually become one. The answer is that most of my life I've loved games. Early grade 9 I remember one of our teachers passed around a card and all the students would right their preferred career path on the card besides their name. I was completely lost when it came to me. I had the damn card for a good 5 minutes and honestly, I had absolutely NO idea what I wanted to do. Then I remember reading some other peoples' choices and one of them had put down game designer.

I thought about it and that felt pretty good. I actually saw myself making games and I put that down as well. Of course I didn't know what aspect of game design I wanted then and I'm pretty sure I had no idea what the branches were. I started programming in grade 10 and that's when I decided that was the branch I wanted to do. I then remember stumbling upon this site and I read a lot of things on the subject of CS and I realized that there was a right way and wrong way to approach my game design dream. I'd initially wanted to go to a game design specific school and go from there but this site made me quickly realize that was a mistake so of course a 4 year degree in CS was the better choice (and the right way to approach my goal).

That being said, I've recently had second thoughts. I still want to do programming but I'm not sure I want to take it into the game design field. I'm open to any field in CS at this point and I can always decide during or after I get my degree. Until then I have no idea what I really want to do...

apomb, if you plan on becoming an engineer then your job is worse than that of a programmer. You sit and sign papers. Have a lot of fun with that!

Nah, they stay pretty straightforward. The challenging part with PLCs is knowing what options you've got and picking the right hardware - which processor card, what kind of networks you need to have, where you might expand in the future, etc. The ability to program several tons of metal to do what you want is pretty cool, but I found that the work isn't that mentally stimulating compared to some other jobs I've had. Still, it's a good skill to have.

Where are you at school?

I respectfully disagree. Personally, I enjoy designing robots, particularly their control systems. Despite the fact that I spend most of the day in front of Java, MATLAB, or C, Tron Eng is still a better choice for this work than CS. On a more general note, there are large numbers of programmers out there mindlessly cranking out klocs of the corporate-language-of-the-week. I'd put that on par with sitting and signing papers.
