valedictorian!

Post subject:  valedictorian!

Yahoo! I am our classes valedictorian for grade 8. Very Happy Although we are a small class, it's still pretty cool being the valedictorian of the class.
There were 4 nominees: 2 guys and 2 girls. And I got it. Very Happy
So, our graduation is in about 2 weeks (today is June 12, graduation is June 24) and I have to write a speech for the grad.
So, I am basically gonna start off with the whole welcome thing, great honour to have this nomination and what not.
Then I am gonna list off all the events that have happened with our class this year.
Then I am gonna talk about an issue that I feel is very important in determining a persons character: determination and will power.

The reason I bring that up is because in a book I read, called "The Mental ABCs of Pitching" and a book that I am currently reading, "The Mental Game of Baseball", a large issue involved, mentally, is determination. It seems that how determined you are is basically determining what you do. It's an unbelievably great book(both) and recommend them to anyone interested in sports, baseball, or the mind in general. So that's what inspired me to talk about that.

I might also talk about the whole gaming the educational system a bit, and how a grade 2, 3, young kid can memorize something, but it takes an older mind to understand it.

Anyone else been the valedictorian?

When we had the vote for Gr. 8 valedictiorian 2 years ago, I had an in-school suspension for mooning the principle. (I didn't know he was in that van!) So, I didn't get to vote.

I must say, in grade 8 and doing computer science? Either you have an awesome school or are a...computer sciencey-guy....

We don't have computer science taught in our school, I just self-taught myself and enjoy doing it as a hobby. Very Happy

It probably won't serve you to well to earnestly say something you feel is really urgent. I suggest you just do the generic and meaningless valedictory address, as it will hardly be remembered: "We went to the Ontario Science Centre, we went to Quebec, we went to Queen's Park, we went to Ottawa . . . etc. etc."
Unfortunately, middle school graduation is not the time and a plethora of 8th-graders are not the audience to receive your message.
Save your words.

C++, some Turing and Python, and some LUA.
And thank you.

I know it probably won't be remembered much, but I really need to say something about it, cuz I've never actually talked about anythign like that in public. Or to anyone really. So I jus need to vent about it. And hopefully someone will take it to heart. Very Happy

Here's my first draft:

Quote:
Hello everyone, and welcome to Bayview Fairways 2008 graduation. As most of you know, I am Michael Parrott, and I am this year?s valedictorian. Surprise surprise. Thanks to everyone who voted for me, I am very honoured to be this year?s valedictorian.
We have been through a lot this year. The events that we have participated in ranged from sports to school projects. In sports, we had cross-country, volleyball, basketball, badminton, relay, and track and field. Just so everyone knows, I made it to all of those teams. More surprises. In school, we did many other fun things. Like sports at recess. Just joking. We wrotre two fantastic pieces of writing: our Turning Point essays, where we chose a turning point in our life and wrote about it, and our Ellen Jaffe heirloom stories, where we chose a family heirloom, and used it to go into the past. In our story of course. We also did some art projects, which were part of an ?Artists in Residence? program. We were very lucky to get that program for our school, since only a couple of schools were involved. This program had us doing animated movies with Eva Ormut and Culture Jamming with Karen Deracades. Inside of our class, we had two special events happen: one being our Confederation Conference, where everyone dressed up and decided on the fate of Canada as a nation, and having a student teacher named Mr. Au come into our class and help us with a variety of things, such as teaching and helping us with work. You were a great teacher Mr. Au, and we wish you a great teaching career. Last, but not least, we had our grad trip to Algonquin Park, which was definitely fun. Four moose!
Everyone here has been through a lot since kindergarten. We have learned a lot, and had great memories. All of us have changed a lot, and overcome many obstacles. Whether it be getting over shyness, learning to speak up for yourself, finally finding about ?what it takes? to get what you want, or accomplishing that goal you have put off for months at a time, you should be proud of what you?ve done, and don?t let anyone else tell you otherwise.
Next year, we will all be going to high school. Well, at least, I hope so. What a step up that is from kindergarten. From what I?ve heard, you can?t take naps in high school. In high school, you finally get some freedom. No guys, you can?t pee wherever you want. You can leave school property during lunch, you can pick your own courses, even though most are still mandatory in grade 9. That was something never given to us in elementary school. No matter what high school you are going to, you will have a great time there.
This year would not be as great as it was without the efforts of the staff and parent volunteers. Things such as raising money for the school, buying sports equipment, and many other contributions have made this year as good as it was. Thank you to them for all of that.
In anything that you do, try. Try, then try harder. The difference between the ordinary and extraordinary is that little bit. And when I say that ?little bit,? I don?t mean that extra dollar you give to the Ronald McDonald foundation. Or maybe I do. But that?s not the point I was trying to get across. What I meant was that even if you are tired or beat, you should keep going because that is the ?little bit? that will get you somewhere.
So now that we are about to graduate, I hope that everyone has a great time tonight. We have had a great year, with Mr. Boley being a great teacher. He may not have been a Ms. Tam kind of teacher, but he was still a good teacher. All of us will miss you in high school, and maybe some of us will have a teacher like you in high school. With that, I wsh everyone a happy graduation and a fantastic night!

Post subject:  Re: valedictorian!

I suppose you posted it because you wanted constructive criticism; I can say two things: A) The surprises part in the beginning is downright cocky even if it is a joke and might get annoying to the audience. Maybe you should think twice about it. B) The transitions from one point to the next are null, as the writing ceases to talk about the differences in between middle and secondary school and next clause begins speaking of the teachers' efforts. I'd work on getting it to flow more naturally.

Author:  michaelp [ Wed Jun 18, 2008 5:55 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:valedictorian!

Yes, that's pretty much why I posted it.

A) Really? I just thought of it as a little joke. Anyways, I'll think about putting something else in there. I'm not too concerned though, since most people already know me well in our class, because it's so small.
B) You're probably right about that, I'll try to get some more flow in some parts.
And you are talking about the last paragraph, with the teacher, right?

I've still got 6 days to do it (maybe 5, since we a rehearsal the day before), but I'm showing it to my teacher tomorrow.

edit: Revision 1 of speech:

I switched the positions of the staff/parent paragraph and the "trying" paragraph, since thanking people seems like it should be at the end. I added some things to some places, and changed the start of the last paragraph.

@Zampano: When you say flow more naturally, do you mean the whole thing or just the last paragraph?

And I guess I'll be replacing those surprise surprise things. My dad thought they were fine, but he knows me. And there are lots of people there who don't so... Yeah.

Yea you come off as cocky after the first read. It might depend on how you actually say it. But at the very beginning where you say: "Surprise surprise" it sounded WAY cocky to me. I think you should take it out since no matter what tone I say it in my head, it still sounds cocky.

yeah man you REALLY have to take those "surprise" parts out of there.... it ill really just make people think that you hold yourself to a higher standard then them and NO ONE likes that.

Another thing, relay is a part of track and field lol.

I ahve a feeling the toilet humour wont get the response you expect either.

... just a couple ideas for you to work with. Also you say that you're pretty tight with your classmates, so they know ur a good guy and everything. So my advice is you've already got them as friends, if you really want to impress people, go for a more mature means of comedy to appeal to the parents. I guarentee that you don't know everyone of your classmates' parents so if you get up there and deliver a speech that appeals to them rather than jsut to ur classmates, you'll really impress people.

Based on marks and how you help and participate in extra-curricular activities, you were nominated for the valedictorian. And there were 4 nominees, then we voted.

wtf? Unless im remembering incorrectly, In my grade 8, and 12 graduating classes, the valedictorian was solely based on who has the highest average. I won best all around student in elementary school, and i know that was voted on. and classmate's award was also voted on, but not valedictorian.

Okay, so here is the next draft of my speech. This is close to the final draft. This is the one that my teacher looked at. He said it was good. The only thing that he would have changed(well, it's actually just a suggestion) is that at the beginning, he would have welcomed everyone individually, so teachers, graduates, etc.
One thing that I'm also trying to do is thank my other teachers in the final paragraph without breaking the flow.
And after reading it over to check for time, I remembered what the "toilet humour" was. Oh well, it can't be that bad.
