Golden Sun was not bad, i also like the tails series of games, epstaly tails of symptohean. PSO 1 and 2 for the game cube (and PS2 i think) where admazing too, tho PSU was not so great. The mario rpg games where not bad as well but they where some what lacking in story and a bit to easy. There are so many good RPGs out there that it is hard to pick a best. |

It's all subjective guys. For Morrwind/Oblivion, I felt that Morrowind was much more instrumental in paving the way for free-roaming RPGs than Oblivion was. Actually, I enjoyed Oblivion more, but it doesn't have as much signifance as Morrowind did. As for Final Fantasy 7, you're seeing that game through rose-coloured glasses, my friend. Play that game today and you will see how the narrative falls flat on its' face. Apparently the plot was more coherent before the English translation, but I don't know Japanese so I'm judging it based on the English version. Final Fantasy 7 had absolutely amazing presentation... it was one of the first RPGs with 3D graphics, and it had gorgeous CG cutscenes... and this is what you're remembering from this game: the presentation. Unlike some of the earlier Final Fantasy games (and more recently, some of the newer ones) where the characters had depth, the characters in FF7 were simply charicatures. The series had taken a step back from FF3 (6J) specifically in terms of the main protagonist. As cool as his hair is, Cloud is a horrible character. I was actually more interested in Zack (a secondary character) than I was in Cloud. However, it still made my top 10. I'm only being so critical of it because everyone believes it to be the second coming of Jesus Christ. It's not. It is a loosely connected plot wrapped up in some revolutionary presentation with some great (albeit old/repetitive) Final Fantasy gameplay. Why is Final Fantasy 8 ranked so high, you might ask? I don't think it was much better than Final Fantasy 7, but I admire the fact that they took alot more chances. The romantic sub-plot between Squall and Rinoa was actually pivotal to the game, and it was consistent throughout. I guess you could say it was pretty cliche, but it was something I hadn't seen in a Final Fantasy game, and I'm a hopless romantic. However, the GF magic system is arguably the worst thing to ever happen to to the FF battlesystem. If FF8 retained the FF7 materia system, I think it would have made one of my top 3 spots. |

I can see what you're saying about FF7 but think about your entire post... not only the FF part but the oblivion part as well you ranked Marrowind higher because it allowed for newer greater RPG's to be made then you said the best part about FF7 was that it was one of the first to have 3D characters and one of the best CG's cutscreens ever so with this FF7 allowed newer greater games to come into action I never did play FF8 for the fact that when I was a kid I never could save enough money to buy it and now when I can it's a great rarity so I can't say anything about the FF8 part |

Presentation was going to evolve anyways. Final Fantasy 7 was the poster child... it wasn't the innovator. Morrowind was the only game to pull off an open world like that. |

Legend of the Dragoon. 4 of the greatest disks ever to grace the PS1. The cutscenes in Legend of the Dragoon made any other game on the PS1 look like absolute crap. I mean, they look better than a lot of PS2 stuff. The story was really good and there was a lot of diversity in there as well. FF7 is only as popular as it is because of "Advent Children" Seriously, if I hear another person tell me "Oh, I only like final fantasy 7... the movie was so kawaaiiii~!!" I'm going to climb a clock tower... The only rpg games I've played recently, aside from FF12 (the game practically played itself), were rogue-likes.Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, and Dwarven Fortess. The latter has a huuuuge learning curve, but is just down-right awesome. |

Legend of Zelda : Fallen Sage is pretty good, seeing as it was a fan-made RPG with zelda stuff, and can be downloaded for free (legitimately). Besides that, Oblivion is boring once you beat all quests (takes one summer approx.). Final Fantasy I is still amazing (besides the endign boss). II sucked, III was decent, VI was amazing and V was obsesive. WoW is techinically an RPG, following this definition : Short for role-playing game, it is a game genre where one or more players adopt a role and act it out in a virtual reality. Usually in an RPG game, you will set out on an adventure or quest, and multiplayer RPG games allows gamers to complete these quests with other gamers as allies over the Internet or as a LAN game. |

WAR, or Warhammer: Age of Reckoning is coming out soon...not too sure how good it'll be, and likely the only people who'll play it are the members of the rapidly declining Games Workshop community. Used to play runescape, but then I realized, the better your character, the longer it takes to do anything. Terrible, terrible game. The developers don't deserve to charge for it. |

SPORE is coming out this year. Sorta an RPG - you adopt a cell's role and play in virtual reality. The quest is to evolve to a more advanced civilization, until you are interstellar. You level-up by evolving with bigger and better body parts for your creatures. |

Hey, I'll just say that Golden Sun 1 and 2 kick all of those games butts! In fact it is the only rpg I can be forced to play. It's a bit long and repetetive, but compared to every other rpg out there, it's the most origibal and exciting game. Personally I'm not an rpg fan, I like FPS and rarely RTS (Command and Conquer Red Alert 2). RPG's waste too much time in ones life! |

For a thread like this, I think it would be a good idea to see what qualifies as an RPG. This website has one ways of classifying RPGs: http://www.rpgfan.com/editorials/old/1998/0007.html Basically this site says that an RPG is a game where A. Characters have Statistics B. Those Statistics can increase C. It has a menu driven combat system Personally, i think that rule C. is a little iffy, but its a starting place.
