My break is the week after too; but because of teh way some of my classes are, one section will miss out on labs, etc. on monday and so mine are canceled later in the week. Basically... I end up with most of next week off too Very Happy

Completely useless... Reading week for me too--no extra holiday and less days to chase after banks and other companies.

Family Day is on the same day as Presidents' Day in the US, the third Monday of February.

Official reasons: http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/es/family/faq.html

"Family Day" sounds pretty lame and so does the Ontarian Government's justifications:
Quote:
Why did the government add a public holiday?

Ontarians work very hard and they deserve more time to spend with the people they love.

Post subject:  RE:Family Day

Its great they added Family Day. Another day to spend with my family. Very Happy

Post subject:  RE:Family Day

One would think that if they were going to release an official FAQ, they would write it higher than a grade eight level and maybe point out the economic reasons as well.

Quote:
How will the additional public holiday affect business and the economy?

Ontario’s economy is strong enough to accommodate an extra public holiday.

While there may be some initial impact on productivity, that will likely be made up when employees return to work.

Employees who get time off may work even harder when they are back on the job.

There is good reason to believe a mid-winter holiday may spark an increase in industries such as tourism and entertainment/leisure.

Most news papers and publications for the general public are noramly written at a grade 7~9 level so peoleop will atucaly read them and understand them. Not even one in the country has grade 12 english sadly. I am sure there are other publications or studys about the emotice effects of holidays if you wonted more details.

Personaly i think we need alot more hoildays in canada (and ontario) tho i don't like the placment of this one.

If it didn't fall on reading week, I'd love it. Enjoy your day off, and enjoy reading week, everyone that's on it.

I'm working on calculus homework that won't be due until Wednesday and won't be assigned until tomorrow. When I'm one day ahead, if I ever want to take a night off homework, I shouldn't have anything to worry about. Plus I learn everything on my own, all of the lessons become review, I get to help others in class with their homework, and when we take up the homework it's extra review.

yeah my dad had to work today so it's not like we could really do anything with the family
so I ended up finishing my calculus assignment due tomorrow.
even though I really don't think this day has much of a use ... as a students perspective ... a day off school? I really don't mind Smile

I think they should have made it on flag day so we are aucatly celebrating something. It would still be a 3 day weekend this year and the same weekend too just firday off rather then monday.

Author:  md [ Mon Feb 18, 2008 11:56 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:Family Day

It'll never happen.

Flag day sounds to similar to Fag day, and no way Harper could celebrate anything that could possibly be close to that.

Post subject:  RE:Family Day

It should be pointed out that Harper had nothing to do with this provincial holiday. But Dalton might be in the same boat.

Post subject:  Re: Family Day

I was told we will have our statutory holiday in August this year but due to Family day it will be removed next year.

So we would rather have a long weekend in the middle of Winter than in the middle of summer?

I know this doesn't apply to students because summer break but for the majority of people it does.

Wasn't the whole point in Family Day all months would have a holiday so why remove one.

We're not there yet anyway. March/April does not have a holiday (depending on Easter). I don't see one in June, and we're still waiting for Remembrance Day to be a holiday so we could be unpatriotic and go on vacation.

If they keep adding holidays more of my summer is going to be baking in side classrooms; I rather have no holidays and a early summer break? no?

who enjoys stuffy classrooms

but again thats just for us school kids.

Well there is a private high school around here that goes all year long with extended march break and Christmas holidays etc. But my friends started a week after the end of grade 8. That's not very good but they can go on planes earlier so no rush and later which make it easier and longer. I wouldn't want it first of all the school is too expensive and I have never left the province except to go to Montreal.
