Isn't Microsoft about to (finally) force the IE7 update to Windows users? You could just wait for that to happen
Personally I would try to preserve my sanity and get out of using nonsense like this.

I'm trying to download and install IE7 however when I try to install it, it says downloading updates for Internet Explorer 7. Yet I do not have IE7 installed yet. It been downloading for the past hour and a bit but I don't think it is doing anything. Anyone have any suggestions? |

Easy solution. Get Firefox! Easier to install and better. I hate IE7 installation. It's gay. |

Your justifications are so insightful. @Silent Avenger: Try doing a full Windows update and only check off the Internet Explorer related boxes. There is an extension for Firefox called IETab (I think) and it allows you to switch between the IE renderer and Fx renderer. You still need IE installed, but it will allow to do all of your browsing within Firefox. |

One less crappy standards-noncompliant browser to support. If all IE users are going to be using a crappy standards-noncompliant browser anyway, they should at least use the same one so that there is some consistency in the noncompliance. |

I wish. IE7 requires genuine XP or Vista. Meaning that all the users running pirated XP or, even genuine, Win2000 will blissfully continue to plague the Internet with IE6. Though maybe the numbers will fall down enough to stop carrying. Looking over the last month's stats, IE7/IE6 are almost 60/40 split and together account for 19% of the traffic. |

The update is not being forced; just sent to Windows Update Servers; which means that businesses that don't want to deploy IE7 and have their computers set to download all updates from their Windows Update Servers need to do something or other to stop it. I too wish IE7 would be forced on everyone. Then I wouldn't have to worry about people running IE6 or worse when designing web pages. |

I'm going to have to argue against that. I'm running a pirated version of Windows XP and have a few virtual machines that I use to test different version (as in versions made by different people). It runs and updates fine. I believe it uses something called a genuine crack. Also, one would think, most people who pirate operating systems, would rather use Firefox or Opera if they couldn't update, instead of IE6. Some good news for web developers though. IE8 is said to pass the ACID 2 test (Firefox does not). Although this probably won't matter until everyone stops using IE6. |
