I haven't been yet BUT a couple of my friends have been accepted to non engineering/ math programs, such as geography and health studies and chemistry. I know what you mean though I'm pretty worried about getting rejected as well. But they take a while for engineering and math programs |

Ha, probably! (Which I dont have by far) I think around 25 people get in every year, and the thingy says mid 80s, but you get the feeling they want better. I threw it in as anohter choice because it sounds kinda intersesting. |

Compared to high school, university is very appealing. I think that's the reason for all the excitement. That and the fact that their hard work has paid off. I know I was excited when I was accepted into UW. It might not be as exciting as a carnival, but I think university is a lot more enjoyable than my prior education. |

First of all, don't give up on Waterloo yet just because they haven't accepted you - it's only February for goodness sake. A mark in the 70s is a bit low for UW, but it doesn't hurt to keep improving your mark and see if you get anywhere. Also, there are other universities out there. A 70s average should not eliminate you from most universities. There are plenty of universities in Canada with reputable CS programs. |

There are universitys out there (in ontario even) that will take students who have 70 averages in to computer sci on ademic probation. If you wont my advice you should get off your ass and apply to a univeristy that will acpect you in to computer sci with a 70s average and start trying to bring up your high school average befor the year is over. Some universitys will allow late applications or even applications 1/2 way threw the year. Why not go to a university that sees students as peoleop and not averages and show up waterloo about what they passed up? |

If your looking for girls, then look no further.... Brock University has as far as I know, the highest proportion of girls. https://careerservices.brocku.ca/Educators/University/Stats#enrollment Although don't expect to see any of these 'girls' as there a mythological creature which never attends class, or at least no class you'll ever be in. Although you can expect to see pack's of these girls on your way to classes. We also have a Computer Science program, although I found it a little too slow. (First year is a joke, but I hear that about most universities) |

I love that line, and totally agrees. my marks may suck, but i do know my stuffs, thats for sure ![]() Competitions are a good way to go. Do the CCC for sure, but also local competitions. Universities like to hold competitions for recruiting, and they tend to be easier than the CCC. If you are good at math, try math competitions (Euclid, etc.) too. It can't hurt. Do you know why your marks are as low as they are? I had marks in around the same range around this time last year, and my math marks were among the lowest. I realized that it was my learning style that was holding me back - I have a very hard time learning from a teacher's demonstration, but I have no problem learning from a book. So I took a distance calculus course from UW, and got a good mark, and was accepted soon after. If you are strong enough in math and independent learning, this may be the way to go if you *really* want to get in. Or if you know something else that's holding you back from getting higher marks (aside from the sad realization that the whole system is a sham), see if you can remedy it before the term ends. |

Post subject: | RE:Accepted To Waterloo? |
I had an average in the mid to high 90s, although I'm not taking IB or AP like alot of you guys, so it's not as impressive as it sounds. I think what really helped me was my AIF. I went to Shad Valley at the University of Calgary last summer, and I keep a pretty balanced life (I invest a huge portion of my time into school/community theatre/music/improv). I've also done alot of practical group websites/programming projects just for fun over the last few years, many of which have became pretty successful (like www.friendcodes.com). I have also been a volunteer camp counselor for a couple of camps. The Waterloo AIF was really long and in-depth, so my guess is that the activities listed above had more of an impact on my acceptance than my marks. Does that help? |
Author: | carpetshagger [ Fri Mar 21, 2008 12:50 pm ] |
Post subject: | RE:Accepted To Waterloo? |
Yeah that helps. I just wanted to make sure that the first batch of offers that went out did go to the people with high marks and good AIFs otherwise I would've been worried about not getting one myself. |

If anything, your baseball intrests are probobally helping you. They want rounded students (as you can probobally tell from Cinjection's admittance). Also, what marks (well, classes) were submitted to OUAC from last semester? I think people who have submitted several of the pre-requisite marks get accepted earlier more easily. All I had was Advanced Functions, though, so I'm not sure if that's completely true. |

Well, I shouldn't have TOO much trouble getting into computer science...My comp sci and eng. marks are VERY high nineties right now (104% on the last major test, 113% on the last major program, lowest mark 80-something...) But then, maybe everyone with a future in programming does this well 3 months into the grade 10 course... Math is what's killing me, 71%. I've got great extra-curricular (acting a lot, trivia team, every 'school spirit activity' the student counsel can come up with...) No sports though... Any idea what my chances are in waterloo? |

Just as a question, does waterloo count courses like electro technology and computer science in your final average? I have a lot of credits with ridiculously high marks in those categories but I have been told that not all universities will count them. |
Author: | Tony [ Wed Apr 16, 2008 9:57 pm ] |
Post subject: | RE:Accepted To Waterloo? |
Your admittance average is different from your overall average. Universities consider the marks based on a collection of 6 courses -- all of the classes required for a specific program + best electives to make up a total of 6. CS will be included, unless you're applying to a program that has a requirement of 6 courses (and CS is not on the list). Though obviously there's more than just those core marks to the admittance process, and a much larger picture is considered. |
