how to delete facebook?

http://stevenmansour.com/writings/2007/jul/23/2342/2504_steps_to_closing_your_facebook_account

is an excellent article on steps. after getting pissed of at facebook, giving information to 3rd party companies and their beacon. I decided to get rid of facebook. Unfortunetly simpyl deactivating an account wont remove your data of their server. You need to go through a series of rigorous steps.

so i decided to email them and see what they said. note i already say i have deleted all my information
Quote:

Hello,

This email is in regards to the deletion of the face book accounts "Mihai
Gheorghe" under the email address of "mihail [dot] gheorghe [at] gmail.com".

Please delete this account from your server, i do not wish to re-activate it
at any time in the future. I have deleted all of my applications and wall
posts and erroneous data from my profile.

If there any other steps that i need to follow please send me instructions.

Sincerely yours,

Mihai Gheorghe

a few hours later i get back this reply.

Quote:

Hi Mihai,

If you deactivate, your account, and any information associated with it, is removed from the site. However, we do save your profile content (friends, photos, interests, etc.), so if you want to reactivate someday, your account will look just the way it did when you deactivated.

If you want your information removed from our servers, we can do this for you. However, you need to first log in and delete all profile content. Once you have cleared your account, let us know, and we'll take care of the rest. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Thanks for contacting Facebook,

note they say you must delete your profile content, which i already stated i did, the lying bastards i spent 20mins deleteing wall posts

so i reply

Quote:

Hi Kieran,

thank you for the quick reply,

i have already removed all of my data previous to me sending the original email!

Does profile content also include "friends"? if so, please confirm.[it would seem almost outrageous to remove 90+ friends]

I have removed all other data from my profile,

please delete my data and any data that points to my accounts of the Facebook servers

Sincerely yours,

Mihai Gheorghe

so far, i havent gotten any responses, but frankly im fed up with facebook, and theyre are quite adamant about not deleting your account.

any thoughts,

i will keep you posted

ironically, as i pressed submit on this article i got a reply from facebook, oh... life how i hate thee

Hi Mihai,

We have made the changes that you requested and your account has been deleted. Friendships on the site will be removed when your account is deactivated. Please let me know if you have any further issues.

huzzah, after about 2-3 hours of dumb work on removing data from my profilei deleted myself of their server.

i wonder how someone with 100 or 500 or 1000 wallposts would do such a thing

any thoughts or anyone willing to do the same thing

This is interesting. It'd be nice if the blogger was less of a Maddox asshole, but I'll keep watching to see if anything happens between Facebook and TRUSTe.

One of my friends tried to delete his account last year. He said that it wasn't worth even trying to delete your account because there were so many problems. He ended up just changing his name and all profile info so no one could really trace him. I think once you upload or save something through the internet and it is publicly viewed it's pretty much on the internet forever.

They store a surprising amount of data, even though u might change your name, changes will be saved as far as i know. and data about you can still be inferred from, various information collected from apps and friends. The only problem i faced was removing apps, which took me a bit to find the main apps page that listed the all of them. Deleting wallposts was annoying like i said, you delete one, page refreshes and reloads, i removed 57 wall posts in total, i guess my un-popularity has payed of Very Happy

How long was it before they responded to your email? I sent one to info@facebook.com about 6 hours ago and haven't heard back. I tried the other two email addresses just recently so I'm assuming nobody is around right now.

Luckily I got rid of everything from my wall (not much, really, considering how little I use it) months ago.

they responded to my first email which i sent around 8 about an hour later,i replied almost instantly and got a response back confirming about 16 hours later, you first have to deactivate your account and then pester them

It's funny; when I first read this topic's title, I thought "Yes, somebody has finally done it"
Being both ignorant to the security to the security measures Facebook takes to protect its site and the method one might use to destroy a wenbsite, I imagined an Indiana Jones kind of adventure, except Indiana Jones is a hacker who is dropped from a helicopter near the Facebook's server . . .

Still no reply. Maybe Facebook is getting tired of this. I'll send another email to all three.

Post subject:  RE:Deleting Facebook

okay so im not sure exactly what you need to delete?

Do you have to delete every wall post you made yourself? That's the only thing I didn't do and they are buried deep down into the walls with no easy way of tracking them...

Post subject:  Re: Deleting Facebook

You have to delete all applications that are linked to your account, this is done throuth a control panel in the account settings area.

Regarding wall posts, you must remove all posts on your wall!

Removing all your apps

groups, super wall, likeness, dilbert, etc. everything!

remove all your profile info which means leave it blank or put it to the default selection eg.
you must remove anypictures you have of yourself, such as profile pics

religion

please select religion <==== use this one the
jewish
muslim
christian

when you log on your profile you should only see

"recent activity, wall(whcih is empty), friends(which u dont need to remove), and your name, anything else has to go,

feel free to add me on msn or gtalk, my data is available if ur logged in,i will walk youthrough it

Post subject:  Re: Deleting Facebook

I emailed again asking a question that ponders many.

Quote:

Hi Kieran,

One last question, which i cant seem to find an answer to.

Why can't Facebook just delete a user's account without requiring the user
to delete all profile data? It is a really big hassle on the part of the
user, it seems more of a deterant to prevent a suer from deleting their
account and just de-activating it.

the response i got was

Quote:

Hi Mihai,

Content uploaded to a profile is the user's responsibility to remove, if he wishes to do so. I can certainly delete a profile without the content on it being deleted first, but then I cannot guarantee that that profile content exists somewhere on our servers. Please let me know if you have other questions.

Thanks,

Kieran

No it doesn't. That's pure bullshit. If you want your profile deleted, why can't they delete everything with it? This "it's the user's responsibility" thing is crap.

It sounds like a violation of their own privacy act actually, I read those things y'know, I'll have to go through it again sometime.

This information is way too valuable to Facebook. It's not just information about you, it's also information about how you relate to other people... and in turn, how all those other people relate to you.

I just tried to delete my facebook and I just got this message back
Quote:
Hi Benjamin,

You can deactivate your account by using the "Deactivate Account" link on the Account page. Deactivation will completely remove your profile and all associated content on your account from Facebook. In addition, users will not be able to search for you or view any of your information. If you reactivate your account, your profile will be restored in its entirety (friends, photos, interests, etc.).

Reactivating the account simply requires that you log in with your email and password. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Now they lie. I marked the point in bold.
I'm not going to bother anymore. I will just deactivate. This way I don't get the stupid emails.

if you dont like the emails, why dont you just disable email notifications? seems like a drastic measure just because of a few emails

I have tried to find were to disable them but that site is so disorganized.

Post subject:  RE:Deleting Facebook

I don't think they're lying, it's just slightly confusing. When they say that it will "remove your profile and all associated content on your account from Facebook" I think they mean "from the Facebook application". Sure it's still on their server, otherwise you'd never be able to reactivate the account.

Or... I don't know. What exactly did you say in your email to them? Maybe they misunderstood.

err just a thought for all those who are deleting each wall post to get rid of it all
why not remove the app entirely
and that way you don't have to delete each wall post for for those of you have it in the 1000s

Post subject:  Re: Deleting Facebook

unfortunetly, you cant actualy remove the wall app, its built in, u need to go and modify each post
