As many of you may not know (it has been kept prity quite) our feduaral goverment is trying to pass a new copy right law that is much like the U.S. DMCA but much much worse. This new copy right law whould make canada the worst in the devloped world in terms of copy right and limit your use of the movies and cds you purcased masively. You will no longer be able to break any kind of copy right proction no matter what or under any case incuding the company going out of business. Thing like parodys, fair use, time shifting and other now compently legeal (even in the U.S.A) uses will be compently out-lawed.

You can find more info here: http://www.boingboing.net/2007/11/27/canadas-coming-dmca.html

and http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content/view/2419/125/

This is compenlet sell out to the USA and lobbists by the conversits and to make it worse the libbrals aucatly voted for the throne speah that methioned that they whould try to pass this law, so it is very likey that if nothing is done this law will pass almost unchalngled and we will have a worse copy right law then Israel. This law whould even mean that if you made your own content on a device that has copy right proction you could not use your own content in other fourms since you whould be breaking that proction on your own media.

So far my only idea on how to fight this is by wrighting to your MP. I plan on typing up a form letter that you can all use and send to your MP and hopfully convice enought of them to stop this madness. In the mean time if you whont to write your own letters, you can find where to send it here: http://www.canada.gc.ca/directories/direct_e.html

If any one has any ideas on how we can fight this or whonts to help writing the fourm letter post! Also post if you have any ideas or comments about this!

Edit: More info on what you can do: http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content/view/1447/273/

Edit2: There is allready a very general letter you can use here: http://www.onlinerights.ca/get_active/copyright_reform_action/ (it makes one for you). However i still plan on making my own template.

Edit3: Another letter template about copy right you can use: http://www.digital-copyright.ca/edid/letter2

Only if some kind of copy right projection is used on it or the media it is put on. Or if it is copy righted with odd restrictions.

Note that the text of this proposed bill (which doesn't even have a number yet) has not been released. While it'll certainly be horrible it's best to wait until you can actually read it (or read an informed piece on what it actually says) before going nuts.

That said... this would be both horrible and awesome. Imagine being able to sue your ISP for decrypting your packets (which should work in hte US too...) as well as makers of software that can do it. All you would need is weak encryption + lawsuits to keep yourself out of most situations... hell even the **AA would be out of luck Wink

I'm still totally against this though. As soon as I read some actual text from the bill I reserve judgement on how much I'll fight it.

Why is the world turning into a shithole? Can't they deal with serious problems before trivial ones?
