Marathon

Post subject:  Marathon

Hey guys, I'm making a marathon attempt tonight. That is, I'm running the distance of a marathon, by myself. As such, I need a huge source of motivation. Over the last few days I've been telling everyone I know about it, and asking that they ask my Wednesday or later how far I ran. This way, while I'm running I will undoubtedly feel like quitting, but I know that if I do I'll have to explain myself to everyone. It turns my pride into motivation.

So, CompSci.ca, with your thousands upon thousands of members, you are the wind beneath my wings.

Can I ask why you are deciding to run a marathon distance? Also, like Tony said, no abusing mod priveleges and deleting this thread!

Thanks Tony. You understand my intentions. Smile

Clayton, because it's the longest run that is a standard. I want to be able to say, "I've run a marathon". Actually, even more than that, I want to be able to say, "I've hit the wall". I want to experience that. It might be a little like death. I'm looking forward to it.

I'm starting within an hour!

I tried Marathon (the UT mod, not the orignal; I'm old but I missed out on that one) and it seemed pretty cool but I hated those floaty phantom guys. Also, it was a little buggy and crashed pretty often.

I liked the akimbo pistols, even though I could only really fire one without something fucking up.

Good luck, Cervantes.

I did it!! Although, it took me 4:45. That's, uh, very slow. Well, I wasn't really prepared. I was supposed to have run several 34km runs before attempting a marathon. Before tonight, the furthest I had ever run was 26km, once. Heh. Still, I'm glad.

Thanks for the support, guys. Truly, it helped.

Pictures on facebook.

And I was dead after jogging one mile (I believe it was mile and not km, it was called the "mile run" in fitness class, but perhaps was a km)

Well I am fat so it made it even worse. Running a marathon would kill me. How is a Marathon, and what was the weather like?

Congrads on the achievement!

Btw, Cervantes, will you be on campus this fall? I'd like to start doing some runs, I want to get back into shape.

I'm on campus every term. Smile Yeah, I'll definitely go running with you. Maybe Martin will come too. Where abouts will you be living?

Aziz: The only difference between a marathon and a more normal run is that the marathon is longer. Beyond a certain distance, for every individual and their preparation, you hit "The Wall". This is the point where you run out of carbohydrates in your body. You begin burning fat exclusively. This would mean it's impossible to go into anaerobic respiration. I guess this means there is a fundamental limit to how fast you can move your legs when you're beyond the wall. Anyways, most Marathoners hit the wall somewhere a few miles before the end of the race. (Unfortunately,) I didn't hit the wall, so to me it was just a normal run except very long. So long, in fact, that it was impossible to run without bathroom breaks. Yeah...

The weather was gorgeous. For the first 10km it was misting lightly. Then the rest of the run was a nice, mildly cool temperature, with some humidity still in the air. That really helped me from dehydrating.

So I assume you are going to attempt another marathon distance again? Perhaps really and truly give it your all and hit the wall? Improve your time? Either way, nicely done.

Post subject:  RE:Marathon

Or perhaps in a real marathon next time. Really though, I don't necessarily think going harder would make me hit the wall. So long as I'm still in anaerobic respiration, it just means working a bit harder for less time. That takes more power, for sure, but energy? That's not obvious.

Yeah, it'd be cool to have Martin join us as well.

I'm living at the same place as before (Westmount and Erb). I just sublease the place out to a friend during my off-terms, so that's effectively my permanent residence until I graduate.

Post subject:  RE:Marathon

Westmount and Erb? Hmm, that's really far away. My thinking is that either me and Martin or you is going to get unproportionally more exercise. But hey, that's not a bad thing. I'm fine with running to Westmount and Erb, running around, then running back. Now for Martin...

Running computer scientists, eh? Wow, the day has really changed. I'm more old fasioned. Fat and lazy. Though I do find myself in the mood sometimes to run like the wind. Like when I have a lot of energy. I just can't go very far. I've got a bit of asthma but it's mostly due to being out of shape. Once schools starts back up I'm hoping to get to the gym more (I still got 2 months credit because they overcharged me like 4 times)

Cervantes, was this an actual marathon route you ran? Or did you just run a really long distance?

I tried running once; but I realized I had a car and drove instead.

Post subject:  RE:Marathon

It was eight times around my block, amounting to the full ~42.2km.

Just so we're clear, I don't run to places I want to get to. Only in a loop.

Post subject:  RE:Marathon

I hate doing that. Running is much more bearable if it gets me somewhere.

md I laugh at you. And sympathize

Post subject:  RE:Marathon

It does get you somewhere! It gets you into a world where you have a new, better body. Haaaw.

Really, I love biking for the purpose of actually getting somewhere, but the difference between biking and running is that biking can be done without getting very sweaty. I don't want to show up to work modeling a thin film of salt water.

I heard an article once on the radio that a lot of new places are installing showers. It's mandated for new buildings in certain large cities, to reduce car pollution. I would love to ride my bike to work (well, if I worked closer to home than 55 kms).

Post subject:  RE:Marathon

Wait, what the hell? How will showers in buildings reduce car pollution? They figure people will just spend the night on their desks or something and wake up to a shower? Or is it just to get people unafraid to ride their bikes/run and have a shower when they get to work? (Actually, both ways work, there's probably someone that spends the night on their desk Razz)

Easy, you bring a change of clothes with you and bike to work. By the time you get there, you'll smell bad due to the sweat. You take a shower, get changed, and go up to your cubicle/office/etc..

The latter, Cleytonz. They would encourage people the ride their bikes to work. I would, except maybe I'd have to wake up earlier.
