Post subject: | Booting from external HD? |
I have been playing with the idea of getting an external hard drive and installing Linux on it, so I can play with Linux on my laptops. Unfortunately I am stuck with some Windows apps so I can't just get rid of XP, and dual-booting doesn't appeal to me since I use hibernation/stand-by. My question is: would an external hard drive (USB 2.0) be fast enough to boot and run linux? Would I have to use my Laptop's HD as a swap, or would a good external HD be fast enough? And second, I know linux has pretty good hardware detection (Ubuntu does, anyway) but with a laptop I would imagine I will end up installing some drivers myself. If I have self-installed drivers, will it be a problem plugging the hard drive into another computer and booting it? |
