Glasses and being nerds?

I mean come on, How dumb is that, if you see someone wearing glasses, you think "Now thats a nerd." Maybe hes an extreme gamer who is poor and cant afford lens. I for one wear glasses and can't stand those remarks. I mean come on, I know I am not a nerd, and I wear glasses due to some heredity and gaming factors.

What do you guys think?

It seems you think no. But you previously said being a nerd requires having glasses.

Hmm lets create wtd, what do you think this guy looks like? Each member is only limited to one personality trait or 1 appearence hypothesis. You have to give a description why you think you are saying what you are saying:

Mine is:

Glasses (*cough* self-explanatory *cough*)

Does this mean you recently got glasses, yourself?

I realy do not think galses says much about you this day and age. Aucatly i find that alot of peoleop almost maybe the magorty that i know have galses or need contacts of some kind. Tho not all ware them all the time, some times it is just for reading or other things. It aucatly scares me how high the % of peoleop that need contacts or eye galses seems to be. I blive that the "eye" indusrty is aucatly giving them out unnessalry for conductions that realy do not need them just to increas profits. For examle i have hured of peoleop who compain that they have truble reading over head projectors and have goten galsses just to read from overhead projectors. I thought every one had trouble with that, lol.

Aucatly i see galsses as becoming more and more of a style thing to the point where peoleop who realy do not need them at all will start geting glasses that do nothing just to fit in and look "cool". I realy think it is the person not what they ware who makes them who they are but thats just me.

Well. I personally know some people with glasses that aren't nerds. But although they stand well over a head taller than I, they are very unintimidating lol.

I think I tend to notice glasses on nerds more. As in, many nerds do have glasses (cept for me, i like to think im smart =\) and I once counted all the nerds who had glasses and yeah.

Plus for me, people who where glasses arent nearly as intimidating, and its hard to take someone with glasses seriously, say if they challenge you to a fight.

Depends what kind of glasses you wear and the way you dress. If you had glasses like Harry Potter then yes you look like a nerd. If you threw some glasses on Arnold Swartasdfoixcvger, I dont think he would look like a nerd... unless the glasses are really nerdy and he was wearing spandex...

Are you kidding me? wtd's going to kick the shit out of someone, here. Wink

Anyways, glasses can often be used as the very opposite of what the poll suggests. Buddy Holly, Elton John, John Lennon, Drew Carey... Their glasses are very much a part of them, and it's difficult to recognize them (well, maybe not Lennon) without their glasses. People have had laser eye surgery or gotten contact lenses but still wear their glasses because people don't recognize them otherwise.

@ Cervantes: no, its been more than 6 months since I got glasses anyways, I said that before because most people tend to think glasses are associated with nerdyness. I don't. But it was just for the sake of humor.

I really gotta point out that more then half of all accedemics need glasses. Theories as to why this is range from spending too much time reading to vision and intelligence being linked... but hte point is that accedimics usually have glasses. And oh look, CS is an accedemic endevour... strange Razz

I know of many people much more nerdy then me who don't need glasses, so being a nerd does not require them; however it certainly helps to make someone fit the stereotype.

not sure if this is true but an eye doctor said that u don't get glasses from reading and too much computer or gaming its more in the genes. all gaming and reading those is put stress on your eyes, but its not the cause of u needing glasses. again i'm not exactly sure if this is true this is wat i've been told.

Author:  MysticVegeta [ Sun Feb 26, 2006 11:49 am ]
Post subject:

Well thats not completely true. I mean if your genes have only 1% of gettting glasses and you put wayyy too much stress on your eyes, glasses will come to you. Laughing but, for me, me being gaming too much and the fact that my "mom" has glasses had a pretty good chance of me getting those damn things. Anyways, today's world around 70% wear lenses cause they want to "look" good to others -_-.

Interesting that you chose to use the English tonne.

Now, back on topic...

I think this isn't even a topic that should be debated over. This is just like asking if people that all wear turbans are terroists. Its just all dumb stereotypes that are...well...just dumb.

@Andy
Well, I have a black belt too Smile I am chinese. So, I was forced into it by stereotype lol. I mean people with glasses don't LOOK intimidating. Mostly because you think. If I knock their glasses off, they can't see as well. Or if I punch their face, glass will go into their eyes or something like that. Its just the look for me. People look a lot more docile when they have glasses on. Tranquil, if you will. Rhyme Smile

And its a stereotype that stereotypes are dumb. lol. half clever.

For example. Im asian. Im short. Im smart (i hope). I have a black belt. I'm posting on a computer science forum lol. I'm prolly good at assembly line but im not sure bout that yet lol.

Very Happy

Umm... I'm willing to be that's another stereotype... making blanket statements like that of any kind generally makes them false.

@electro mandate: WTF does that have to do with nerds and glasses?!
/me points to title: "SEE?!"

The one thing I don't like is that people are starting to confuse geeks and nerds again. Geek != nerd. I am a geek, and wearing glasses certainly contributes to that geekiness, however I am in no way a nerd.

Author:  chrispminis [ Mon Feb 27, 2006 9:00 pm ]

So... why doesn't Coutsos wear a turban? lol j/ks

Well I always thought a nerd was someone who was ridiculously smart in general, mostly school related.

While a geek was someone who was ridiculously smart (and obsessed) with a specific thing, not necessarily school. Like Warhammer. Razz

Do you have any idea how stupid that would make me look with my kilt? Not to mention I couldn't fit it underneath my sombrero. Geez.

Anyways, "geekness" isn't like Pi, you can't give it an exact definition. Here is a simplified explanation for you.

I dunno, turbans and kilts, I'd wear it, could be a real trend. In fact I've already got em on right now. Time to go to the mall and see how long it is until someone accuses me of ingesting illegal narcotics.

And I've seen that "flow chart?" before.

Coutsos' link isn't that bad actually...

Really a nerd is someone who is really bad at socializing except with other nerds, who focuses excessively on one or two things (like role playing; building robots, and sometimes (but not usually) computers), and has a general inability to talk to the opposite sex.

Geeks are more able to socialize, though they generally prefer not to outside of their group of friends. Geeks are usually knoledgable in all sorts of things; they can know less then nerds but know about many more different things. Geeks also know girls; and how to please them. The stereotype that geeks don't get the girls is entirely wrong, though we don't broadcast that fact usually.

There is more to it then that; but those are good places to start with defining the differences. There are also many different kinds of geek, it's difficult to group them all together.
