Well, I got early acceptance into University of Waterloo for Computer Science Co-op, not gonna accept offer yet, because I also applied for math and business double degree, 2 bachelors for my time

I chose BCS instead of Bmath. I dunno if I can switch, 'cause I hear Bmath you learn more stuff?

Nice.

Hikaru79 and I got accepted to Toronto on Monday. Him for co-op CS, me for Math and Physics. I got $8000. Smile

Gotta submit my Waterloo AIF's. Hope to do that in the next 30 minutes.

Hm, UT just called me about EngSci, I thought it would be a phone interview, but it wasn't. Never made it clear about accepting me or not. And even if they did, I'm not sure I'll go. Its an excellent opportunity, but geezus... its tough.

Cool, I'm in grade 10 so I'm only scouting but what are your guys averages from high school? Of if your still there what are they now?

88, 89, 90, 91 for my 4 years, maths being highest marks

Anyway, I just found out ALL the students from my school with decent marks (over 85% average) got into ALL the math programs they applied for, the simple ones like math, computational, CS etc...

heh, thats funny. Mass early acceptances. Math is prided at our school though, we have an absolutely terrible CS program.

how is that leet? alot of people get in that program...

Well early acceptance, a bunch of people applied, that I know of, he's the only one who's got an early acceptance.

And he's leet 'cause he's... well Will, will's always leet, at everything. Always at the top.

Anyway, I just realized, all the people who applied to the math faculty and are in the AP calc course got offers in to the math they wanted. Its nothing big though, the others will just have to wait a bit longer.

Author:  we64 [ Wed Feb 22, 2006 11:54 pm ]
Post subject:

yeah, Will is leet. DD never offers early acceptance. After all he is Will, he is good at math, not just good, very good in math and CS. Just to show you how good he is, he got 91 last year in Euclid.
But he is applying to US, Princeton, already had an interview and it went well I guess. If he get accepted from there, I think he will go, at least I will go if I am him.

Not to be popping bubbles here, but I don't honestly consider early acceptance into anything in Ontario "leet" based solely on that. Ontario isn't exactly the stellar height of difficult admissions.

Early acceptance into Princeton and Stanford on the other hand...

98 Cool

Woot! Waterloo AIF (Math) is in! It's scary how long that took. Engineering one is going to be even worse.

Paul - Go for BMath!

This is an odd post time for me.

Edit: Yeah, yeah, Martin. You only live once. Go live life. Yeah.

Thank you for your opinion, not that it was asked for. I shall continue to apply "leetness" to whoever the hell I want. Will did apply to princeton, and he's going to be accepted. Its a personal opinion, sorry to pop your bubble, but yours does not override mine. Even if you do get accepted into princeton early, I still would consider Will to be better. You know why? 'cause he's an awesome person. Now go away and troll somewhere else. If you want to start a thread about admission standards, go start a thread.

Cervantes: yea, prolly Bmath.

Not only that but waterloo is just as recognized as school for CS as the top US univerisities (or colleges, or whatever they are called). I'd definitely consider it to be leet. Something about the 70%-90% drop out rate for CS also says something about difficulty.

that too... but I mean come on. Take real-time for example, that is an insane course. They recomend you only take two other courses with it (and those bird courses) so that you can spend all of your time in the lab working on stuff. That course is insane for work. And there are other just as challenging courses too!

Some advice for anyone in CS.

Comment everything. Comment your comments. Explain why you chose the variable name you did. Explain how it makes you feel and why you think specific other variable names weren't as good as the one you chose. Talk about the philosophical meaning of the for loop. The recommended ratio of comments to lines of code in CS at Waterloo is 314:1. Think your comments are good enough? What if a blind person with downs syndrom who did not speak English tried to read your code? That's what I thought. Back to work.

You just don't know how to write self commenting code. The trick is to write code that is so close to english that it is indistinguishable from a comment.

Oh, and actually writing code helps... though they don't take marks off for commenting when you don't hand anything in Wink

Dude.

I lost marks on my first mips assignment.

It involved adding registers together. I don't know what I could have commented.

addi $3, $4, 5
...
etc, etc.

Like, there's not much that really goes there. Why are we adding five? Because the assignment told us to. Fascists. I put the header in, and a copy of the assignment text too. But no. Of course, I probably would have been given full marks if I had a #add 5 to register 4 and store that in registry 3.

For all the mips programmers who don't know how addi works...

Don't be so defensive... I didn't say you couldn't apply it to whoever you wanted, I just said I disagreed with you. Entertainingly enough, right after telling me that my opinion doesn't override yours, you went and told me to leave - so your opinion overrides mine, just not the other way around? Nice to know.

Anyways, yeah Waterloo is something like tops in CS in north america?
meh i dunno

And IMO any programming language that tries to emulate the english language, is doomed to fail. I think this because good quotes easily corrupt me lol. And i dont know who said something like that. but i liked it Smile

People have this notion that american schools are better than canadian schools.. That may be true in the sense that they are ranked higher, but what do the rankings really mean? It means that they have more nobel prize winners, they have better facilities, and they publish more and better articles, and they do more advanced research and are able to get results. And none of the four really has anything to do with undergrad. Do nobel prize winners teach undergrad? very rarely they do, but since they dont like teaching undergrads, they may not do such a good job. Canadian Universities are ranked lower because we do not get enough R&D funding, but once again, that has absolutely nothing to do with undergrad. Waterloo and Toronto are top universities in the world when it comes to undergraduate studies, how do i know? because students who come out of these schools are able to get into Ivy League schools for grad school, and able to become successful in the world.

So when it comes to your undergraduate studies, Princeton may have more famous prof's than waterloo, but the quality of education isnt that much better. Its only hard to get in because the US has 10 times the population of Canada, and princeton is 1/10th the size of Waterloo. And yes, Waterloo has a world renowned CS program, go check it out here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_waterloo#Famous_alumni_and_faculty

Smile Average, indeed.

I just logged into OUAC because they sent me an email saying the finals for first semester have been added. Went to "Choices/Offers" and what do you know, I've had my offer of admission from UW CS and UW Math for the past week! And I only submitted my AIF yesterday.

I guess the offer is in the mail. I wonder if they'll send something more when they see the AIF too.

It's easier to get a higher average in higher years of high school, because you get to pick your courses to a greater extent. In grade 10, I think my average was about 94; in grade 9, it was a bit below 90.

Despite the conclusion I'm sure you jumped to, MysticVegeta, I don't wear glasses.

Also for anyone willing, what were your course selections in grade 11 and 12? Mostly gr 12.

Not quite. The universities calculate your average based on the required courses for your program, then your best courses until 6 courses are got. For example, some programs only require English, so they calculate your average with your English mark and your best 5 U or M courses, other than English.

chrispminis wrote:

Grade 11:

  1. Biology
  2. Phys Ed
  3. Chemistry
  4. English
  5. Geography
  6. AP Math
  7. Music (instrumental)
  8. Computer Science
  9. Physics
  10. Repetoire

Grade 12:

  1. Phyiscs
  2. Biology
  3. AP Calculus
  4. English
  5. Chemistry
  6. Computer Science
  7. Geometry and Discrete Math

lol, I fully agree, Cervantes must be a robot. Upon further research I found out that he recieved a 99.25% average in his first semester in grade 11.

Oh, and I'm taking:
Physics
Math
Chemistry
Biology
Computer Science
History
Religion
English

By the way, Gandalf, the 99.25% was second semester, grade 11. Wink

I don't intend to go into biology myself, but I took it anyway, to keep doors open. It's got me a great upcoming summer job. And heck, you know what they say: the 20th century was the century of physics, while the 21st century will be the century of biology. Hearing that, it's not a door I'd want to close. And even if you don't want to go into the sciences, it's a good course to take. I urge my artsie friends to take biology. Even if you don't want to go into it, you learn a lot of important things, many of which help to keep you healthy.

Bull. That's the most common misconception Canadians have about American universities, and it's absolutely bunk.

Are you able to get a very good education in Canada? Of course. Can people who get Canadian undergrad (or postgrad) educations become successful? Of course.

Is the quality of education at top American undergraduate-focussed universities (Princeton, Amherst, etc.) not "that much better" than at Canadian universities? Of course it's that much better.

No, it really isn't. American undergraduage univeristies are better known because they are significantly older, not because they are better. All universities are different, some offer better programs in some studies then others; however american universities are not simply better.

Yeah, its true, canadian universities undergrad can definitely compete with american universities. We are, after all, considered an educated country. American University reputation doesn't come from their undergrad programs.

Also
@ Cervantes. 10 subjects in grade 11?! how'd you manage that? My school has a maximum 8 courses a year. And we're not even semestered! It's considered a good school, yet we don't have AP courses =\ What school did you attend? Also, I have a little handicap/advantage? when it comes to courses. Im in french immersion, so French is compulsory for all four years.
But otherwise your grade 12 courses are the exact same as I plan, plus French.

I took biology in grade 10, and repetoire is an after school, year round program (band).

Newmarket High School. Still do.

Where does the key go? I've tried the simplest substitution to no avail.

I cant see where it is.
For everyone else here's some help?

Original Message
O PZYU HFK ZLL, HFK ZLL ZJZTU JU SOYP HFKB 1337 YZLUGYA, YFF XZV O ZJ GFY 1337!

Remaining letters after key
ABCDFGJLMNOPQRSUVWXZ

Occurence of letters

0- C,D,E,I,M,N,Q,R,W,T
1- A,B,J,S,V,X
2- G,P
3- H,K,O
4- U
5- L,Y
6- F
7- Z

Here's what I have so far but it could be horribly wrong.

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Y K FO B UH T

I don't see the key pattern yet. I used logic that HFK = THE since it occurs again and in the form of HFKB = THEM? Does O=I? By the position in the words of U I guessed S.

Im also assuming its all alphabetic and that the numbers merely represent 1337 as in leet.

Wanna help a bit?
