Well that at least had a question implied, although it lost points for idiotic spelling.

What is the discussion supposed to be about? The politics behind the choice of location, whether or not the results actually mean anything, whether FPS should be added as a sport?...

Wait a minute. Today's Friday, and that means I didn't drink any milk. What the hell are you planning, Pwned?

Seriously, why don't people call it Torino? It sounds better, and there's no confusion to worry about.

Add that to the confusion of some networks using the English "Turin", and some using the Italian "Torino".

It's like people who pronounce Quebec "kay-beck" in English conversations. Quit trying to be such know-it-all-fancy-pantses. Wink

Auactly in some langues some names are produced and/or spelled difrently. For examples; in grek i blive Canada is Kanada and in japanese canadian or any other nantionaly is aucatly in jappnes with the sufix -jin on the end.

This is beside the point tho, what i ment is if the name is producted a scrent way in the socity/langue that is know and accpectable to the magority of the members in it, why go to lengths to make it harder to understand?

In Japanese, Canada is Kanada too. No pronunciation difference though. Heck, Japan in Japanese is Nihon or Nippon. Crazy people, driving on the wrong side of the road and they don't even know the name of their own country.

Author:  codemage [ Tue Feb 14, 2006 9:52 am ]
Post subject:

So the case in point is that if you're talking to "English" people, you don't tell them that you work in Nippon. You adopt the pronunciation of the people you're talking to, and say "Japan", like a good westerner. Wink

When in Europe, visit the cities of Torino, Venizia, Milano, Vien, Munchen, etc.
When you get home and talk about your trip, please refer to Turin, Venice, Milan, Vienna, Munich, etc.

So... do people actually like the winter Olympics? I'm not so crazy about it, personally. People (Canadians?) may be enthusiastic about Olympic hockey, but I don't much care for the idea of professional athletes competing in the Olympics. Not that this is something exclusive to the winter Olympics, I just like to bitch about hockey now and then. Wink

I'm suprised people actually like the summer olympics. A bunch of overbulked athletes running around in circles and/or throwing various objects of choice, and occasionally jumping over stuff.

And then there's a bunch of pro basketball players from the US playing a series of college & highschool players from other countries. I can hardly imagine anything less interesting. Wink

No... seriously though. Surprised

But that is the Olympics. Sport, as I understand it, isn't about teams. Sure you go there with a bunch of people you may know, or (probably?) live in the same country, but the sport is about bettering yourself. Be the fastest. Be the strongest. (Well, that's about it, with a bunch of different variations)
Except for fucking Gail Devers (sp? who cares!). I was watching the Olympics in 2004 and saw an event she was running. For those who haven't heard of her before, she's a hurdler (and maybe does other things) with ridiculously long nails and the belief that she's so special she has to be the last person to take her mark. Anyways, in one event she ran and just crashed into the first hurdle and then gave up. Sure, she was having troubles with her knee or something, but I was all "Haha Gail Devers you idiot! Get the hell out of my country now."

I could hardly imagine anything less interesting, but then I remembered this one time that somebody was trying to teach me C. The fun part about the Olympics is that at least the whole world can come together and say "God I hope America loses". Wink

thats always a good event but the only problem i have with that is that the olympic committee took off some wrestling events to fit them in

also, whouldnt it be nice if they added rugby? i could understand y not football since it would only be USA and then no other countries, but rugby is pretty much evenly spread out between countries like south africa, new zealand, australian, Uk, and etc

Rugby would indeed be a good sport for the olympics; it's played most everywhere ('cept maybe the states) and is a very challenging game.

Large, sweaty men barreling at each other, or hot women in skimpy clothing. I don't see why you're upset.

i would like to apologize in advance for double posting but this post has absolutely no relevance to the previous post

zhang/zhang skating won silver, and yet the girl fell right on her knees and slided, but the move that was attempted was rlly hard
she also continued after fracturing her led in that fall

does anyone think that medal was deserved?

Author:  chrispminis [ Tue Feb 14, 2006 11:05 pm ]
Post subject:

Erm I think it was a pity medal.

They are really skilled and all, and the judges know that, but the score is based on their performance. They performed sub-par taking into account the big fall. But I think they scored a bit higher than normal cuz the judges were thinking, wow she fell but still managed to do that triple double place thingy, she must be extremely skilled. The olympics is a bit hollywood like that. It took skill to do what they did after the fall, but I think they should be graded disregarding the fact that she is possibly injured.

Last notes

Summer > Winter

The "english" way to pronounce quebec is kwa-beck or kwee-beck, instead of kay-beck.

I prefer Torino, but since this is compsci, Turin is fine simply for the Turin(g) pun.

EDIT: Not really an edit but a last note.

Canada Womens Hockey Team so far > everyone by margin of at least a gabajillion.

International teams pale in comparison to canada, I thought russia would do better considering its known for good hockey, but what was the score? like 1 * 10^40 to 0?

The judging system for skating has been mathematically shown to be in large part based upon luck (the new system that is). It was slashdoted a short while ago IIRC (might have been digg). Either way I wouldn't call Figure Skarting a sport with considering any more... it's just too messed up with the judging and all.

That's quite ridiculous (although would be symbolic and garnish much attention), considering this Olympics outstanding eco friendliness, we dont need to risk the symbol for the Olympics for another advertising stint.

On another note, congratulations Canada on a small flurry of medals.

That's punishment for the whole loonie-in-the-ice shit they tried to pull. It was cool then, but dammit, you never use the same trick twice. Now, I don't know if they actually tried to stick the loonie in the ice this time, but if anybody has seen the commercials for the commemorative loonies I'm sure you'd agree with my "teh lose" sentiments.

They had no effective team leadership without Yzerman & Lemieux. Lots of good players, but nobody to general the team.

(Not at all to infer that those two could've played - but that's the major missing element that was present 4 years ago when they won).

I'm a Leafs fan - but anyone who thought that Pat Quinn could provide any sort of leadership or inspiration or strategy (or anything besides a constant stream of profanity) was sorely misguided.
