heh Dan, everybody knows that if it isn't rap, then it's old school actually this poll should be changed to have a single option of "songs about sex" because almost every song at least subtally hints on the topic. I'm serious, especially Disney songs that Brenda plays. Weird. |

"Music these days" is crap, in my opinion. At the moment, I'm really into Quicksilver Messenger Service. |

Personally I've been getting more into pop-ish, pointless-yet-really-easy-to-tap-your-feet-to rock, as-of-late (pardon all the dashes). Mainly: OK GO, Franz Ferdinand, The Walkmen, Canoe, Oasis, Gorillaz, etc. |

Anything owns rap (expect beats, but those are different), and has more meaning. Above all stand rock and metal (any kind, I hate the assumption that it is all "heavy"). Old school 4 teh w1n!11! |

It irks me when people refer to Heavy Metal as Rock. Now, if one were to refer to Heavy Metal as Rock N' Roll, well, they're just ignorant. MysticVegeta, what bands are you referring to by Heavy Metal? I semi put ACDC and a good portion of Led Zepplin's stuff in that category. |

Personally... /\ I occasionally listen to classical music, and I like it, especially compared to things like rap, but I prefer the above mentioned music. Not saying it isn't "genious", just not my preference. Quote: I semi put ACDC and a good portion of Led Zepplin's stuff in that category.
You've got it wrong then, and it's not purely based on personal views. You are saying that you dislike it when people call heavy metal, rock - I agree. Yet you are clearly doing this yourself since the mentioned bands are rock bands, not heavy metal. You want heavy metal? You should compare Zepplin to Cryptopsy or anything like that (I forget exact names). What is ignorant then? |

I hates them! I hates them, I do's. We hates thems... [/Smeagol] Gandalf: First, let me say that Heavy Metal is a big honking genre. It extends quite a ways back. No. Led Zepplin was one of the key bands in the start of Heavy Metal: Wikipedia wrote: The discussion of the history of heavy metal, from its 1960s precursors to the proliferation of heavy metal sub-genres of the late 1980s, can be summarised in the following key artists from three main waves of bands that to a large extent came out of Britain: 1. influential rock bands like The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who and The Rolling Stones in the 1960s; 2. "early" heavy metal exemplified by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple in the early and mid 1970s; and 3. the New Wave of British Heavy Metal pioneered most successfully by Iron Maiden and Judas Priest in the late 1970s and early 1980s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music I like how The Kinks are listed immediately after The Beatles, as they are such an incredible band. Much more so than The Who or The Rolling Stones. I also note that Led Zepplin is listed first in the second category. Here's another quote, from the same source: Wikipedia wrote: The earliest music commonly identified as heavy metal came out of the Birmingham area of the United Kingdom in the late 1960s when bands such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath applied an overtly non-traditional approach to blues standards and created new music often based on blues scales and arrangements.
Wikipedia wrote: However, it was the release of Led Zeppelin in 1969 that brought worldwide notice of the formation of a new genre.
Wikipedia wrote: The early heavy metal bands, like Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, UFO and Black Sabbath are often called hard rock bands rather than heavy metal, especially those bands whose sound was more similar to traditional rock music. In general, the terms heavy metal and hard rock are often used interchangeably, in particular when discussing the 1970s. Indeed, many such bands are not categorised as "heavy metal bands" per se, but rather as having contributed individual songs or works that contributed to the genre; few would consider Jethro Tull a heavy metal band in any real sense, for example, but few would dispute that their song Aqualung was a quintessential early Heavy Metal song.
So. when I referred to "Heavy Metal", I was referring to Wikipedia wrote: "pure" heavy metal in the lineage of the "grandfathers" - Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.
Although I do like Jimi... I assume he's put into that category for his astonishing use of amplification and distortion. |
