Google Summer of Code is a contest held by google to encourage progress in Open Source projects. Unlike a usual contest, there really is not much of a competition here. All you are required to do is complete a task provided by a Mentor. The site has a list of various Participating Mentoring Organizations.

In order to apply you are required to send google an application through here, following the Perl Software Foundation's Proposal guidlines. You are also requied to be a student (from anywhere around the world), which google defines as: Someone currently enrolled in or accepted into an accredited institution including but not necessarily limited to colleges, universities, masters programs, PhD programs and undergraduate programs

You will win: $4500 USD and a tee-shirt

The following deadlines have been posted by google:
May 31st: Start of application process on code.google.com
June 1st: Last Day new Organizations will be listed on code.google.com
Interim Period: Back and Forth with applicants on the Summer-Discuss Google Group
June 14th: Final application submission deadline.
June 24th: All applications approved or rejected. Cut $500 checks for initial funding.
Interim Period: Give the students a helping hand and guidance.
August 3rd: Google gives a preliminary progress report at OSCON
September 1st: Deadline for all student work (pencils down).
September 30th: All adviser feedback in.
October 1st: Announce successful participants. Cut final checks and send t-shirts.

eh? what aiya... did you not understand it? you as an individual should apply if your are confident in you coding skills.

compsci could host as a mentor, but we have nothing to offer Razz nothing big nothing opensource. so my post really (i mean _really_) has nothing to do with compsci but you programmers out there.. SIGN up already go to google's site and look at the mentors listed and click the (ideas) link beside it to have a look at available tasks that you can enroll in!!!

Will you do the Summer of Code again in 2006? Next season?

We currently have no plans to do another one, we want to see how this one goes first.

Did anyone join this year's contest? And if anyone did, how would you rate it's difficulty.
