W.I.N.E. = Wine Is Not an Emulator.

You can get all the good toys with it.

Only simple toys that do not require much to run. Almost anything i have tryed to run in wine that was at all complacted has not worked. Intresting tho, turing works in it Razz

Hacker Dan wrote:
Mplayer is prity good when it is not casuing masive errors that requize it to be reinstalled.

hmm i have no problems as such.. i compiled it my self.. works perfectly.. (btw: compiled on SuSE)

watching movies/anime on this thing is better than watching it on windows. Its much more responsive and no lag time between audio/video ever. Not only that, sound effects and video quality is just outstanding.

but once u compile mplayer it's not just going to work out of the box.

i suggest compiling with the following commands:
code:
cd /mplayer/source/directory
./configure --enable-menu --enable-gui --enable-largefiles
make
sudo make install

NOTE: the configuration above will install mplayer with all optimizations and all features, so long as ur platform supports it and you have the required libraries and repsective header files (-dev packages)

this will create mplayer, gmplayer and mencoder in /usr/local/bin
to use gmplayer you need to download a font file and a skin from their website. after that you need to extract those .tar.[bz|gz] files and cd into those directories then copy all contents in that directory to /usr/local/share/mplayer/Skin and /usr/local/share/mplayer/Font respectively. (i'm not sure if those exctly are the direcotries, just double check). On thing you need to keep in mind is that after copying the skin dir into its respective location.. rename that directory as default

Now even after all this it will give problems if it is not correctly set. open gmplayer and right click it and select properties.. then quicky choose a font (the one u downloaded from the website) and then select the audio tab. selec OSS, now select the Video tab and select xv (it might be tempting to chose other like gl but you shouldn't it just degrades performance) now that should do it.. if u want u can also make sure mplayer uses the ffmpeg codec for encoding and decoding for optimised feedback.

PS:There is a catch to compiling stuff your self: you have to take care of the dependencies your self. In SuSE its quite problematic unless you decided to install "everything". If not i suggest install the whole of GNOME, then install all the C++ utils and compilers (u should switch fomr search to selections for this) then search for lib and aslo for dev (switch back to search heh) and installl as much as you can or want to. but make sure u dont just install libs alone, you need the respective -dev packages as well. also install all from the multimedia section as well.[/b]

Ya i know, thats how i installed mine too and i did install everything :p. I look in to it and it seems that it only crashs when i have some other media player going at the same time Rolling Eyes.

One good tip for SuSe is to add some other sorces for YaST, like:

ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/suse/suse/i386/9.1/

has all the stuff in the for verson of suse and that is not in the noraml one

and

http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/9.1

that has helped me alot by seting them as sorces so i do not have to go looking for all the things that are dependedt for a package i am trying to install. I also have a copy of the cd files on my hdd as a sorce just in case i need them for some reason.

rizzix, have you tryed to run xMule or aMule on SuSE? I have been having some system luck ups only while ruing thos affter about 15mins-1h of having them runing.

how strange.. we both have the same OS, and strangly it gving you problems.. did u install suse from FTP or did u install the personal .iso or maybe somthing else.. i installed mine through the FTP method, that way you get the latest of stuff. o do a YOU (yast online update) might fix thing out, then try re-compiling it.

Visual Studio 6 sucks so badly it's not even remotely humorous. Possibly the most broken C++ compiler I've ever seen.

Wow, some one side it befor me for once. Persoanly i hate all of M$'s visual crap. Also i whould go with some free atertives rather then: M$ office, mcafee, and zonealarm. Like using open office, avg and there are some free fire walls but perosnaly i like a router with a bulit in firewall more then a software one.

ummmm, a fire wall is not going to stop them from telling what kind of netwrok trafick you are using/doing. Athougth i whould deftaly use one in a dorm to stop poleop from geting in to your computer tho. I blive that they monitor what you are doing online by wtaching the netwrok trafick and looking at the packets and not by puting evil software on your comp so a firewall whould not help. I am prity shure they could tell prity much anything you are doing by just looking at the packets and the only way i could think of stoping that whould be ecripting them some how but both you and the server on the net side (ie. the web page) whould have to sport that and it is ushely only done for loging in to secuer webpages and when ordering stuff online.

All these concerns about the school monitoring what you're doing... since it seems it's aimed at basically exploiting Windows to monitor your network activity, bring a Mac.

Or get cable internet in the dorm. Every school I've ever seen lets students sign up for cable TV in their rooms, and there shouldn't be anything stopping you from extending that to cable internet.

as far as i know, they would not invade your privacy so the stuff on your computer is safe, but since you are using their internet service they have a right to monitor your traffic, as dan said...
so dont even think about kazaa, torrets and stuff like that
yeah you could probably get ISP in your dorm, if you can afford it

There's also the problem of bandwidth. You have to realise that if the school is providing internet access to you and another 10000+ students, that's one hell of alot of data being transferred both ways even if you aren't downloading porn and pirated software. If you're using their internet access, they will limit your bandwidth.
