That's pretty amazing :).  The thing is, by the time they release it "officially" to the public they will probably have already prevented these kinds of things.  Actually, personally I'm still not sure how long GMail will continue with all the issues that are popping up now.

i think, if you go to the prefrences and check the box "reset counter when the notifier icon is clicked" ... it will reset that 18 to zero ... it worked for clearing the ghost "60" from mine.
