Transferring data over IP

I'm pretty new to Java (though not at all to coding). Anyways, I was wondering how java implements network communication, and if someone could point me in the right direction or to a related tutorial. All I really want to do is read and write on a network stream to another machine with a given IP and port. Thanks is advance.
