i went to run and typed in msconfig. then i went to the startup tab and unchecked some of the useless programs that startup. after i restarted my computer i got a message and then i just checked not to see it again. when i typed in msconfig in run again it shows that it loads on selective startup. i change it back to normal startup and then all the startup items are selected again. my question is should i keep it on selective startup or keep it on normal startup with all the useless programs starting up?

It really doesn't matter... if it starts up fine on selective startup, then leave it, you really don't want things running unless they're needed :D

r u sure it doesn't matter if it runs on selective startup, or some of the programs might not run or might not be able to install anything? i really don't know if it's okay. does anyone on compsci have their computer running on selective startup?

Well, if it boots properly once, then it must work :P If it stops working, you can always change it back to the way it was

-----------------------------------

yeah, I run it on selective startup.

it just means that it loads only the selected items from the checklist. When a new program is installed, it is checked onto that list by default (I think) :?

So as long as everything loads and works fine from selective - use that

well i unchecked a lot of the things that startup on my computer. however the problem isn't really solved. the computer turns on quikly and i could enter any of my programs except connecting to the internet. i have to wait about 2 minutes on top of my booting of the computer to connect to my internet. also since i unchecked those programs from starting up and running shouldn't they not run because when i press ctrl + alt + delete and go to processes they show that they are all running.

if they're still running when you press ctrl-alt-del then they might be started by some other program; if you cant get rid of them don't worry about it because they don't use very much system resources (really only memory) and they might be needed by some of your other programs.

About the internet, could you connect right away before you disabled all these things? It could be that one of the things you disabled is needed for fast connecting (maybe zone alarm...), although it could also be your internet...

i could only connect when i hear my driver make some sound so the problem might have to do with that

i'm aware of it slowing down my computer but the problem is not with my computer running slow. the problem is that when the computer starts up i could access any of my programs and games and everything else except the internet. after about 2 minutes it will allow me to access the internet. u might be right it could be a problem with norton, so maybe i have to change some setting in it or something. i know a lot of people that have norton and don't have this problem

svchost is the service host program; it generally runs more than one service, so you may only have one copy, or you might have more. Stopping it will stop your computer from running. if you want to see which services are running use the services control panel (it can be found in administrative tools), only disable a service if you know what it does, and you are sure that you don't need it. Disabling some services will prevent windows from booting again. If in doubt leave it be, and as always google is your friend when it comes to figuring out what each service is.
