Allow me to describe the average topic life cycle at compsci.ca: 1. Some noob stats a topic. 2. Somebody else replies with something useful. 3. Another person replies with something useful. 4. Some jackass comes in and says something stupid about the tiniest little thing that the last person happened to mention (ie, one sentence out of the entire post). 5. The winged spam-monkeys descend and proceed to anally rape the topic. 6. Somebody points out that things have gotten off topic, but people ignore him. 7. Another thread is started and people lose interest in this one. From here, many things could happen: In some cases flaming starts and may or may not stop. On occasion, a moderator will choose to lock the topic. In that event, another mod will add some comment about somebody being stupid. Then a few other mods will join in and have their own stupid conversation. Just because they can, I suppose. In other cases, it could be an old topic that keeps getting brought up months later. A mod might lock it, and in the extreme cases will just change the name of the topic.
