Applying to University

-----------------------------------

Time to generate some talk, I know a few of you fellows must be going off to university next year. Whered you apply to and for what.

I applied to Mcmaster, Waterloo, Western for civil engineer.

Have another month of my hard semester to go, then it will be smooth sailing through rest of high school. :)

I have a question, someone whose already done it might be able to answer..

int he info book for waterloo for instance it says
All of our offers of admission and scholarships will be made no later than June 3, 2005, and you will have until June 13, 2005, to respond.

how does that work if i wont be done calculus by then, do i respond to the conditional? or what..

They give you conditional offers of acceptance that basically state that your average can't go below the line that they set for the specific program.

In actuality, as long as you do reasonably well, they'll honour your conditional acceptance. For example, if the required average for some program was 85, and you get conditional acceptance, but your final average is only 80, chances are you'll still be okay.

well tahts always nice to know, thx
won't really matter cause all my required courses except for calculus are this semeseter. so ill only have calculus and an extra (or if worse comes to worse i have an 83 U course kicking around)

Just didnt know with that whole "You must reply by June 13th thing" if you still had to reply on a conditional.

Anyone going into computer science at waterloo (or possibly others), if you like math, check out Combinatorics & Optimization. I found that Computer Science was a little bit too light on the math, so I switched into that.

Anyway, here's the link: http://www.math.uwaterloo.ca/CandO_Dept/index.shtml

The whole of math.uwaterloo.ca appears to be down. It should come back up soon.

I'm preaty sure that they require you to be of a good character.. sorry :naughty:

anyways, as you guys probably know, I'm in
Mechatronics Engineering concerns the design of computer controlled electromechanical systems. It includes robotics and automation systems, neural prosthetics, micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), and many other leading-edge technologies. Basically, the dream program for people who probably couldn't cut it in a real faculty.

Three for free? I thought it was three for like 50 bucks or something. Then 30 bucks a choice after that. But I haven't applied yet so I'm not positive on the costs.

You pay for an application package that includes 3 university applications. I think it's smart of them, because you should apply for: dream school(just for the sake of flooding them... who knows?), realistic school and a safety.

Nope. The 10 year plan is:

1) Get my undergrad at Waterloo.
2) Go to either MIT or Berkley for a Ph.D
3) Do some post-doc work back in Canada
4) Eventually become a prof.

And to me that is more of a down side to a school then an upside unless u are in a nuclear engering progame.

Students + Nuclear Reactor = Bad

Um optimization: The procedure or procedures used to make a system or design as effective or functional as possible, especially the mathematical techniques involved.

are those procedures already out there, or do you have to learn to make them? Well, at least the post doc work will get you some money, being a prof is pretty appealing though.

It's not about the money. Being a prof, I will have a salary that's more than enough to live with, but my real motivation is the lifestyle. Being a prof ensures that you are around some of the brightest people out there for your entire life.

As well as not so bright people if you end up teaching a first year course.. but what you do is just not allow any questions to be asked and you're set

Being a prof does sound appealing, but I think I'll be setting out a different career path for myself. Something along the lines of PEng + MBA

Well if you dont have your PEng, if my understanding is correct, you just cant sign off on things. Like a P.Eng is able to sign off on things saying they have looked over it and it follows all of the standards and such.

if you don't have PEng, nobody would care if you sing anything or not. You simply don't have the qualification to make the judgement call. That's why PEngs make 6 figures /year - companies need to make sure things actually work.

i was wondering what kind of post secondary education you should pursue(and where) if you're interested in software engineering for games. I know that there are at least 2 game studying campuses: Digipen( in washington ), and full sail ( in florida ) but these places are a bit out of the question, cause i live in toronto.

well if you got to live in Toronto, and I'm assuming that the university has to be easily accessable by public transit... UofT is the place to be.

Though I personally suggest trying to go else where. In anything, just for the sake of not living at home.
