I remember a thread about this a while back, I'll see if I can find the link.

Basically you need to find yourself the programme Resource Hacker.  It's absolutely great for fiddling with Win32 apps.  It will hold the answer to not only your icon troubles, but many more as well.

I believe the_short1 has some links to such programmes on his homepage (look at the Compsci homepage for a link).
