You can judge the speed of such a system from a usual Windows or Linux on a PC perspective. The Itanium does floating point ridiculously fast, and typically Itanium machines have incredible system bandwidth. Ya mostly. But so are Itaniums. Doesn't mean you can't use them for other applications. Though I hear that AMD's Opteron processor is better when it comes to this category. Although I'm not a big fan of AMD, so I'd buy Intel.
